    Hi all,

First ever article on this site so be nice!

Was just doing my sums and realised that we've paid about the same for our strongest first team as Liverpool paid us for Andy Carroll:

    Harps (Free - academy)

    Simpson (£750K) Williamson (£1m? approx) Coloccini (£10m) Enrique (£6m)

    Barton (£5m) Nolan (£4m) Tiote (£3.5m) Jonas (£1.5m compensation)

    Ben Arfa (£6m) Shola/Lover/Best (Free - £1m)

Comes out at just under £40m I reckon, and shows one of two things:

    - how shrewd Hughton was in the transfer market, or
    - how tight we've been in spending money - espec in the striking region!

    What does everyone think??

Cheers - hoping for a hard fought win tomorrow but fearing the worst!

I think we've spent wisely. We purchased players that could do a job for last season and this season (e.g. Williamson and Simpson) without breaking the bank. Financially we must be pretty sound. Being shrewd means when we secure survival this season we have a decent pot of cash to improve the squad.

Hughton and the scouting team done a great job on the signings we made and how cheaply we got them. We could easily have spent loads of money and been no better off in the league. Any other season we'd be mathematically safe by now. If we stay up on a shoe-string budget this season then it's an even more succesfull season.

    And welcome!

    Welcome!

Its good to see that for once we are now quite shrewd with money. However to get the player we require to push on we will need to spend more money on individuals.

Hope we can get some gems for little money. I think we have bought well with the little funds we have had, now we need to buy very well with the extra frunds we shall have.

To my knowledge, the only great value players which were signed under Hughton were Tiote, Ben Arfa and you could say Simpson, and that was under recommendations from Carr, our head scout.

He also signed Williamson, Routledge, Best and Gosling on a free. However, he also signed Lovenkrands, Pancrate, Campbell and Perch.

Fairly average transfer history really. Perhaps slightly average with Tiote and Arfa, but I don't know whether it was him or Carr who found them. Apart from them though, he hasn't been responsible for any other of our most valuable players.

Perch is better at heading, as we saw earlier this season...

As long as we stay up I'm sure we can all look back on his howler in good humour! Maybe he just wanted to be on 'what happened next' in a question of sport in a couple of years.

    This perked my interest.

Lets say on a scale of 1-10 how good his signings have been.

Lovenkrands - Free - 7, quality in championship and now alright in prem
Simpson - 750k - 7.5 Good buy, solid if unspectacular
Williamson - 1m - 7.5 Did the biz in Championship, decent back up (for next season I hope)
Routledge - 1.5m? - 6.5 Great Championship player, however, definately a championship player
Best - 1m - 7 Alright in limited appearance last season, been best after Carroll this year
Campbell - Free - 4 Had potential but now past it
Perch - 1m - 3 Not much spent, but hopefully get rid of in summer!
Ben Arfa - 5m - 8.5 Great buy, hope he lives up to potential
Tiote - 3.5m - 9.5 You can't buy that quality for that price unless you are good in the market
Gosling - Free - 8 Looked good last year, still young, for free, A STEAL

Totaled up and divided means Hughton's average is...

    7.5

Feel free to disagree with some ratings, but 7.5 is a good transfer market manager :)

    Some good points guys!

Interesting the split opinion on Hughton's transfer policy. It does seem quite hit and miss, but you can't argue with Simpson and Williamson for less than £1m each, and even Best (originally looked a terrible buy) has come good. So really only Campbell (despite being free) and Perch count against him.

If we invest the £35m wisely, I reckon we could have a good team with a decent backup squad next season... big IF though!

Lovenkrands - Free - 5. Average/below average. Average player, average score. If Lovenkrands is 7 then Tiote is about 50. If he wasn't free, about 4.
    Simpson - 750k - 7.5 - agreed.
Williamson - 1m - 6 - if Simpson is 7.5 for 750k, and imo he's better than Williamson, so Willi would get less, especially as he was 250k more.
    Routledge - 1.5m? - 6 - Again, considering that Simpson was 750k...
Best - 1m - 7.5 - if he continues his goal to game ratio, damn good buy for a mill.
Campbell - Free - 3. If he was anything other than free, he'd be a 1. Pretty much a waste of wages really.
Perch - 1m - 1 - Considering that Simpson was 750k, this was an horrendous buy.
    Ben Arfa - 5m - 8.5 - Agreed.
    Tiote - 3.5m - 9.5 - Agreed.
Gosling - Free - 7 - Good buy, but I couldn't give him an 8 right now without seeing how he plays. So far, he's just been taking up wages whilst injured.

So, an average of 6.1 Fairly average score. Perhaps slightly above average, but that's something I'd expect from any EPL manager who isn't ****e.

Also, Hughton can't be wholly responsible for Ben Arfa's signing. It's Pards who went forward and actually purchased Arfa outright, even while he was injured.

I think Lovenkrands last season means he's worth a 6 at least, and if we're judging by Simpson standards then everyone is way overpriced!
Perchy a 2 maybe  otherwise i was probably looking through rose-tinted spectacles :)
