Well well well. After a very nice fortnight long holiday with sun, as well as catching three Olympic events (you should try to go if possible, the atmosphere is electric), meeting two very pretty Canadian gymnasts on the Tube and spending a night with a lovely cheerleader, I have returned to the land of rain, sheep and real ale, and it couldn't be better. Oh, and football. Having failed to catch even one tiny little pre-season friendly, I will have to go on how much I rated our players beforehand and also by what people are saying elsewhere of our new signings - Purdie seems to have impressed along with Parry, with Weale and Doble failing to really catch the eye. However, really, the time is not right to judge players. Oh no. That time was four weeks ago, when we first signed them. That is when one has to decide if a player is any good or not. Gornell and Morgan look to be doing very well. Gornell I've stated on numerous occasions has the quality in my opinion to excel in League One, and even moreso now with goals flowing in which was probably his weakest area last season. Morgan has surprised me and I hope he continues his form into the start of the season - he seems play very well at the start of campaigns! Anyway, enough of my off-topic rumblings. I know this thread is a little premature, but I'm so excited for the start of real football. Soggy, undercooked pies, numb toes and crap performances away from home await, and I challenge anyone to turn up their noses at those pickings. This match, now only six days away, we will take on the once mighty Leeds United. After years of being good, they went crap and sank to the soggy underworld of League One. Which, for us, is the promised land. Perspective is a funny thing, isn't it? Anyway, they have ascended a little and are now a strong championship outfit, guided by the odious Neil Warnock. I would expect them to play pretty physically, but I do like our preseason results and tendency to play well against better teams. I won't put together a form guide or stat pack as the season is still in its infancy and I'm feeling quite apathetic after all this typing, so I shall end it here. My prediction? Well, a goodly 4-3 win for the Town, with Gornell bagging two and one apiece for Marv and Wright. No début goals but a goal-line clearance off the bench from DJ. As for the attendance. Well. Tricky one that, but I reckon it could well stand at a healthy 17,970.
well i go Leeds- 2 Shrews- 0, i think it will take us a couple of games to settle in and going by my pre season match conclusions. 17,250
i agree it will take shrews a few games to settle in, but hey, we are on a roll. leeds 1 shrews2. 19332. gornel 2
my the leeds fans are on fire about bates bottling the takeover deal. i think i may have thrown a gallon of petrol on the fire!
anyone going to elland road may need a tin helmet, in case an anti bates riot gets going. worth a look at not 606 leeds.
When we assure ourselves of a second consecutive promotion, I think it's safe to say that, due to AJ, we shall be universally despised by championship clubs.
I'm sure they love it really. They might do a Brizzle and come to love us really, really deep down after a few months.
Leeds will probably go 4-4-2 Kenny Peltier White Lees Pearce Varney Norris Green Austin Becchio McCormack
A stranger! For what it's worth, here's what I expect us to play: ----------------------Weale -Purdie-------Grandison----Hector--------Jacobson -Taylor-------Richards(c)--Summerfield------Wright ----------------Gornell------Morgan
Leeds fans on one of their forums think it will be a walk in the park and a 4-0 win to them and won't even need to put out a strong team, I don't think they know much about us and would love to bring them back down to earth. With last season's wins over Derby and swansea's first teams and excellent performances at Arsenal and Middlesborough, along with very good pre-season performances against Wolves ,Birmingham and Leicester ,you can never underestimate The Mighty Shrews! Leeds 2 - 2 Shrews ( Morgan & Hall) Town just missing out on pens!! 23,459 attendance. Bates smuggled out on the Shrews team bus disguised as Lenny the Lion. Looking forward to this another ground to tick off the list. .................Weale........................... Grandison...Goldson...Hector...Purdie Parry....Richards....Summerfield....Wright Gornell.........Morgan
Evening folks, looking forward to the banter??? It'll be no ewalk in the park, but would expect us to keep a clean sheet against Gornell and Morgan. How do you think you will do in the league this year?
Our strikers do seem to like playing against higher league defences though, it's against teams at our level that we seem to encounter problems! I personally am confident we'll score but realistically expect us to lose. However, we are as good as the opposition it seems; raising our game against better teams. As for our league season, I think we'll achieve mid-table mediocrity quite comfortably and finish around 14th.
