Why the **** is Barmby considered a club legend? Apart from his first and last full seasons he only featured in around half our games. If he wasn't from Hull he'd be held in the same regard as somebody like Ryan France.
ok ill reply in a serious way even tho im not sure if this is a wind up . He is a local lad , one of a very small list that played at the highest level domestically and internationally . He came to the tigers while he still had pleny in the tank to play at the highest level. He helped to get us 2 promotions he worked his arse off when we were carrying floaters and hangers on he took over as manager when NP left - i dont think Barmby really wanted the job. he so far has stayed quiet when he was dismissed from the club . overall id use the following ... solid , dependable , legendary local hero , classy to describe Barmby hope it helps
I'll give you that one. Not sure if this one is true, his career was in steep, steep decline after his spell at Leeds and his loan spell at Forest. How much work did he put into the second promotion? He was a bit part player at best by that point. he frequently did his 'angry little man' routine, but did it get us anywhere? He definitely wanted the job, he was probably disappointed it took him so long to get it. So he can get money out of us. I'd rather he said what he has to say so we can put it to bed. I think 'classy' is a bit of a stretch.
he hardly played in our last promotion season. I was glad he was injured because he wasn't that good. He came back for the play offs.
seems i delivered the exact response you craved I hope i helped you vent some steam before breakfast at least
You blew it right there, you quite obviously weren't watching us then, or you wouldn't make such a daft statement. Is your opinion on his impact during the second promotion season based on nothing more than checking his appearances on wiki? **** thread by the way.
I agree that what he did at city is vastly overated and when you compare his contribution to real city legends like stu elliot and ashbee i think its only the "hes one of our own" lot who would describe him as one....probably only for that reason in reality.
I don't care too much whether he is still our manager or not but you can't knock his contribution to our club while he played. Just watch the goals he scored in the Watford play off for instance. He might have missed a lot of games but he scored some crucial goals and some really good to watch goals as well. He deserves some respect as a player and may I say, as one of ours.
Although he has a tendency to go too far, it's good to see Percy back in his contradictory and provocative mode. We need a few more passionate debates on here rather than the mind-numbingly tedious stuff we've had lately. Just don't put your Hitler head on Percy, because then it gets a bit irritating.
It's hardly a passionate debate, it's one bored/lonely boy trying to wind others up by making deliberately provocative posts.
I have often thought the title of Legend is granted too early, but it amounts to not much more than a genuine feeling of admiration and gratitude and on that basis I would say Nick Barmby just about scrapes in. When he moved back to Hull as a resident, he was doing it for the first time as a player. His last season at Liverpool, Leeds and the loan at Forest were unexceptional, so a move to Hull, back home (not club-wise) was a good thing for both parties. His time with Hull provided some memorable moments, alot of them in a cameo role, so it is his early achievements compared to other Hull lads that just about gets him through for me. Whatever your opinion, he is a decent guy whose time with us could have ended better, but I apportion no blame to anyone for that, except, maybe, Adam Pearson.
I think that a look back to our second promotion back in 2004 would show that Barmby played out his skin that season. The way he turned the game at Sheffield Wednesday mid season was phenomenal, all the sweeter considering that we had taken over 8,000 supporters to that game. Nick has been the link between supporters and players during his time at City. On the occasions I have met him he has been nothing but polite and accommodating. The first time was back in the summer of 2004 (I think) when we played Alfreton Town in a friendly following the signing of Ryan France. To compare the two players is disrespectful to both of them and each equally played parts in City moving forwards through the leagues. We would have probably seen more of Nick if it wasn't for Peter Taylor's inability to keep him on the pitch beyond 65 minutes. Top 3 Nick Barmby games that stand out for me are; 1, Sheffield Wednesday Away 2004 2, Watford Home (Play Offs 2008) 3, Walsall Home 2004 - Fastest ever City goal. 8 seconds I thought his contribution in the Premier league was also a valuable one. He scored in the league and in the league cup against Arsenal. He and the following players to me are considered contemporary city legends. 1, Dean Windass 2, Ian Ashbee 3, Andy Dawson 4, Bo Myhill 5, Stuart Elliott 6, Justin Whittle Think if Justin had been 5 years younger he would have joined the likes of Ash in our rise up the leagues. Maybe not beyond Championship but all the same legend.
Sir (not sure how often that word is used on here), you have just put your finger on the exact reason why the OP has a hatred of Barmby.
