I don't know how well it explains sprinting. Rowing, archery etc, yeah sure because it encourages kids to take up classes but you don't need inspiration to find out if you're a great sprinter. I have no idea, I may have been a natural at rowing or archery, I never had the inspiration to take it up. Odds are I'd have been terrible, but who knows? If I was inspired by somebody to follow in their footsteps I would have found out. As far as sprinting goes, well, I never went to an athletics club but I know for a fact I wasn't born to be a sprinter. If it turned out I was born with mega fast genetics then I may well have developed that and become a sprinter, but I most certainly wasn't.

It doesn't help that schools in the UK don't seem to push Athletics. I'm sure everyone around my age (and maybe a few of the older ones) would agree that PE in schools is absolute ****e, and without that drive, kids won't be easily exposed to Athletics.

    **** knows!

I agree. At my school it was basically football in the winter and easter terms and some ad-hoc athletics and the odd field event in the summer term which mostly seemed to consist of cross country and maybe tennis, but then my school wasn't sporty.

The school I was at before then was really sporty and we did football, rugby, cricket, gymnastics, athletics (but on a less ad-hoc basis), field events (shot put, high-jump, etc,), hockey, swimming, basketball, tennis, squash, golf and maybe one or two others.

I think it was Wisescummer who summed it up the other day, just looks like someone trying to move a lame horse.

    Haha!

Could imagine during a Roman Cavalry charge on the shores of Sicily some poor Italian geezer trying to keep up to speed with the rest of the pack.

I'm not complaining though, horse dancing gets us golds. Hell we've got that bitch from Britain's Got Talent who is pretty good at dog dancing, get that in the Olympics.

Nah that dog got shanked in London recently when it was being taken for a walk. Jealousy is a cruel beast.

    That's completely and utterly appalling!

Edit: I've found nothing on google or wikipedia, I'd have thought something like that that would have been all over the internet.

Dressage is an absolute joke. Only Great Britain could get a gold medal in something so stupid.

There have been some performances so far, in these brilliant Olympics, but if I can set aside all the British ones, including today from little Jade Jones and Nicola Adams, for the moment, and the obvious Mr Lightning Bolt, I saw the race performance of the Games, in Kenya's David Rudisha. The way that guy ran had me gasping at his speed over two laps, and he didn't even seem to be hugely out of breath at the end. I can't remember such a magnificent display of breaking a World record from the front. What a nice modest bloke too. When he said he would break the World record if the conditions were right, there wasn't the slightest hint of a boast. He just spoke the truth. He epitomises the Olympic goal. Absolutely fantastic.

Totally agree. I saw a documentary about the Irish missionaries who are coaching the Kenyan runners and Rudisha featured pretty heavily. He was struggling with his form then, but he was magnificent. What an athlete. So chuffed to see him break a world record.

Pretty confident we will finish 3rd in the medal table now. Massive achievement when you compare our populations to some of the countries trailing in our wake!

Whats more amazing is we have more golds than the 4th and 5th place nation combined. And 4th place is Russia. The question is whether we can keep this going. Australia had a great games in 2000, look at them now...
