Fergie on RvP: "I don't have a gut feeling about it. We can't get a break through with Arsenal. Its hard to know their thoughts.I don't know what Arsenal's thoughts are because they're not giving anything away."

Sir Alex Ferguson says he is persevering in his bid to sign Robin van Persie after losing out on Lucas Moura.

With PSG declaring they have won the race to sign Brazilian Lucas for a club record fee, speculation has been rife that the Reds are stepping up attempts to land the Arsenal captain. Although the Gunners would clearly prefer to sell to a club outside of the Barclays Premier League, the boss is hopeful a deal can be struck.

"I can't give you any more information," he said when asked about van Persie. "We have made a bid and they've been trying to negotiate with other clubs. We just have to persevere. Hopefully it will come our way. We're trying our best but there's no progress at this moment in time.

"I don't have a gut feeling on it at the moment, I must admit. We're not getting any breakthrough with Arsenal. It's difficult to say why they're operating this way. I don't know what their thoughts are because they're not giving anything away."

Regarding Lucas' sale from Sao Paulo, it is further evidence that the cash-laden Parisiens mean business in the transfer market.

"I find it quite amazing that a club can pay €45million for a 19-year-old boy," Sir Alex continued. "To make a mark on everyone - to tell everyone that PSG are here - they've signed Thiago Silva from Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"They must have spent about £150m in the last month. As you know, the only deterrent to that is UEFA. In the conditions of European football, you don't qualify for Europe by winning the league or coming second - you only get in by invitation. That's where, hopefully, UEFA can have some power. When somebody's paying £45m for a 19-year-old boy you have to say the game's gone mad."

Unless your name is Fergie, and then it is fair game, bitter old scroat, sticking his nose in to other people's business. Hypocrite.

Sounds like Arsenal do not want to play ball with United. Good on them..

11. If I was an Arsenal fan (that's twice I've sick in my mouth tonight <grr>) then I'd rather see RVP go to a foreign side for £15m than to Man Utd or Man City for £20m.

Same goes for us and Agger. If we can sell him to a foreign side for £5m less than Man City are willing to offer, take the hit and send him abroad <ok>

When discussing FFP i have tried to make this point clear many times but it seems to be missed by many.

Uefa indeed have the power and the ability to enforce it in regards to exclusion from europe, it really would be a complete none issue and completely unchallengeable in court should they take this action.

It would be like going to court over not being invited to a friends birthday <laugh>

When has he ever paid 45million for any player?

and arsenal dont want to sell but if RVP wants to come here then he will and it seems like thats a very real possibility.

Well you are trying to pay £25M for a player with no resale value. Usual hypocritical behavior from United. Fwergie really is a grade A idiot

17. I've not questioned whether they have the power in a legal sense - although I am sure the top clubs will have had their lawyers working on the loop holes since it was announced. I question with the have the will power to follow it through, once a Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus, Man Utd, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, etc fail to meet the terms, we'll truly know the impact. Not sure Man City will come into the category of a super power yet, same goes for Malaga but maybe Chelsea will? PSG certainly do.

Proven world class striker for 25million.

Unproven teenager for 45million.

much higher risks with one though potentially higher or at least longer rewards.

#29118
19. Fixed <ok>

I appreciate what you are saying but one has three or four years left at the top, the other could be at the top for over a decade AND had a resale value that would get a large chunk of that fee back <ok>

Edit: 45m for a teenager is still crazy mind <ok>

Second Edit: Didn't you guys pay £30m for a 18 year old eight years ago...? That is fairly similar when you consider inflation. He would have cost Man Utd over £100m by now too but obviously he has some medals to go with the wage slips <ok>
