I'm quite young so I never got a chance to see the dominant teams of the 70's and 80's, therefore I can only go on players that I have seen regularly. Fowler is my favourite LFC player of all time - intelligence, skill, composure and clinical. Quite a controversial choice but I would have to choose Torres (based on his best 2 years for the club). On form and at his very best, he is possibly the best striker I have ever seen. Blistering acceleration, speed and pace to match, skill, intelligence, movement, composure, clinical. He was described as a player who rarely scores the same goal twice - such is his ability to score any type of goal. One of the few players that when I see them clean through, I just have faith that they will score.
With me being 31 years young (queue the snide remarks), I'll do from what I can remember: Reina Rob Jones - Sami Hyypia - Daniel Agger* - John Arne Riise Steve McManaman - Steven Gerrard - Jamie Redknapp - John Barnes Robbie Fowler - Fernando Torres * when fit, he is immense! Was hard to ignore Rush but I only caught the latter end of his career, similar with Barnes but he's a little younger and we don't have much competition for the left!
Grobblar Rob Jones - Sami Hyypia - Carragher - John Arne Riise Steve McManaman - Steven Gerrard - John Barnes Robbie Fowler - Ian Rush - Michael Owen So hard to pick strikers but Owen just ahead of Torres as I remember idolising him a lot more, I used to play football pretending to be Michael Owen & Robbie Fowler
I always struggle with these as there are so many but am amazed at no mention of KD yet? My front two would be KD and Torres two of the greatest players I have ever seen.
GK...Reina Back four...Rob Jones, Hansen, Yeats and Sami...no left back but how could I not pick The Collossus (if it looks like a ball kick it....if it doesn't look like a ball kick it until it looks like a ball). Midfield....Gerrard, Souness and Barnes. Strikers...easy this one...Kenny in behind Robbie and Rushie. Subs: Clemence, Hughes, Byrne (need a left back somewhere), Callaghan, McDermott, Heighway, Hunt, Keegan. Fookin good team
---------------------Reina Jones—----Agger-----Hypia----Riise ----------------Mascherano ------Gerrard---Alonso----Barnes--- --------------Rush------Fowler That is almost impossible to do!
-----------Clemence------------- Jones------Agger------Hansen-----Riise -----Souness------Alonso-----Gerrard---- ------------------Kenny--------------- ----------Rush----------Fowler-------
Your right just when I think I have it I think of someone else.however here goes Reina Neil. Hanson. Hypia Alan Kennedy Gerrard. Sourness Barnes Dalglish. Rush. Fowler But so many I could have put in .hardest thing was to leave Emlyn out (god bless him ) then Beardsley, nicol,McMahon, hunt, the list is endless
Surprised nobody has picked Lawrenson yet. Twice the defender that Hansen was. Keegan deserves a mention too. Despite all of them though, a young John Barnes is the player to build the team around. Absolutely unplayable during the late 80's (for Liverpool if not England).
I'd have Jockey over Lawro me any day. I did have Keegan as a sub (what a sub that wud be) and I agree with you about Barnes too I love the idea of having the steel of Souness, athleticism of Gerrard and **** hot skills of Digger in one team...add to that the vision of Kenny and goals of Robbie and Rushie that team would score more goals in ten games than we did all of last season.
"that team would score more goals in ten games than we did all of last season." I doubt they'd bemoan hitting the post as much, as if that in itself is some sort of second prize. Talking of which, I was back in the 'Pool a few weeks ago chewing the cud with my fellow red brother-in-law. It's astonishing, looking back, that Rushie hit the post so few times, as his main tendency was to take the shot on early and drive towards the par post. So accurate - perhaps he used to practice? I know we have memories of him rounding Minns in '86, but honestly, get your old vids out. More than often, as soon as clear in the box he stops time like that kid with the boomarang on telly when I was a kid and hits the ball hard and low, just inside the post (often brushing it). outstanding accuracy.
Tommy Smith was incredibly underrated - never mis-controlled a ball and a superb passer. Always played with his head up. dead slow and his knees were shot though.... Chris lawler was the best right-back we ever had. Jimmy case was the best right-back we NEVER had. Both better than Neal, I'm afraid.
Yeah my dad raves about Chris Lawler but for me Rob Jones was the most talented full back I've seen at Anfield. I remember his first season and he was unbeatable at right back, we played Villa and he switched to left back to mark Tony Daley (who was absolutely flying that year) and he never gave him a sniff at anything. Was a cruel blow to the lad getting the injuries he did. Oh an every time I talk Barnesy to my dad he goes into Peter Thompson mode
Rush was class mate. Born to score goals. I almost always thought he was gonna get it stuck under his feet but he was just so good at getting his head over the ball...no doubt aided by his massive conk
Chris lawler was the best right-back we ever had Forgot about him....it's just too hard you could pick ten teams and still think " what about so and so "
Talks a lot of sense your Dad Billy. Lawler was the template for attacking fullbacks. Problem was he got married and knackered and whent into what we called Lawlers Doze. I just love Digger but for a wideman even he could not match Peter Thompson. Pace, power, incredible dribbling skills, hell of a shot and a good crosser of a ball. Thompson's flaw was that he had difficulty lifting his head. He just loved beating defenders and by the time he was ready to cross all of our attackers were covered!
