That different style of attacking seems to be one that doesn't end with the ball in the back of the net so it's not really much use. ;)

I've actually just had a thought on how I could make him useful for us (whilst doing the other thread). He's really good in the air, especially for his height, so once Stewart is fit we could use them a bit like we used Elliott and Price in D3 (Koren in for the 2nd striker from that season). Line up like this:

    Mannone

    Rosenior, Gerrard, Hobbs, Dawson

    Chester, Evans
    McLean, Koren, Stewart

    Fryatt

When Stewart (I know he's not back this season, just using the loanees to fill the gaps in the squad) gets the ball on the left McLean comes bombing in at the back post unmarked to nod in the cross. How often did Elliott manage it when we had Price picking the ball up on the right? Neither of them were given any real defensive duties as we had Ashbee and Keates sat in the middle to cover the defensive side of the midfield.

I'd still rather have Ajose in that role because he totally outclassed Stewart when I saw them both playing in the same game (and switching wings at will) but I could see him doing a job if we applied that system in games. That could maybe be our away formation where we need more pace to counter against sides, and then at home have a 442 with Simpson and Garcia coming in for McLean and Koren. That leaves Koren to come on and help control things with lazy possession once the game is won.

Some of our so called fans just cant wait for our players to f*** up, no one will be more disapointed with that miss then Mclean himself I recon, and the lads probably had some good banter about it in the dressing room. He missed a very easy chance granted, some fans on here are acting like he deliberately scored an own goal against us FFS !! Mclean does ok for the team, his work rate off the ball is 1st class. This stage of the season and whats still possible, surely the last thing anyone needs is slagging certain players when we should be encouraging them..

Emile Heskey never had the best scoring record, but he was a decent centre forward. Occupies space creating space for others and harries defenders.

Wow, just seen it on FLS, it's even worse than it looked the first time. I thought he was in the middle of the goal, he was virtually at the left hand post and still got it going wide of the right hand post (if it had been going fast enough to get there). So long as we don't miss out on the playoffs by a goal I'll be digging up the youtube clip to laugh at this summer.

it happens... if any of you watched the man city vs man utd game yesterday you would have seen a once £30m striker miss 2 piss easy goals in 30 seconds. i mean to miss the first one is bad, but surely that wakes u up and makes u concentrate.. the second was just laughable.

mclean will bounce back and i'll be surprised if we try to sell him in the summer, i think he'll be on the bench and we'll bring in another striker to partner fryatt.

OLM, posting to Stoke fans that you hope they and their families die of AIDS is unnecessary too.

Lets not argue the merits of Mclean v Simpson when the true facts are that neither of them could be rated as upper Championship class. and consequently both need replacing for next season.

are you ****ing kidding me? Not only is Simpson still young, but could quite possibly be considered upper Championship with the right team around him. I wipe the slate clean for the first 15 games, where he failed to find the net. It was practically impossible. I really do believe he could turn out to be a top quality player for us.

Everyone says 0 in 15, but ask yourself this: how many one on ones or big chances did Jay miss in those games? Next to none. He had absolutely **** all to feed on.

Haven't we heard all this before with the much heralded "Star Spangled Striker" known as Jozy Altidore? No supply, sh!t team, he's still young, etc., etc., etc.
We can all rant on, that's what message boards are for I guess, and we all have our favourites but where strikers are concerned it is a simple analysis of "putting ball into back of net" and failing to do so will attract caustic comments. Here in Oz I rely on Championship Highlights and my sons and grandsons (who are season ticket holders) and their consensus is that I would stand a better chance of being awarded a knighthood for stripping naked outside Paragon Station, sticking a Didgeridoo up my arse and farting "Falling in Love with You" rather than McLean and Simpson making it at this level. From what I have seen I would tend to agree with them. We will need much, much better than these two if we are to reach the "Promised Land" again.

What your sons haven't seen Roo is his performances for QPR last season. When he joined us he looked about 2 stone heavier than when I saw him for them (6 or 7 full games) and he looked a completely different player as a result. Even when he got his goals around Xmas his performance hadn't got close to what he'd produced for them, he looked to have shed most of the weight but still wasn't sharp. Against Donny he was starting to look like something approaching what we (well I) know he can produce, and we know not think because we've seen him produce it before.
