Well seems like a couple of the youngsters did well on tour so may get an opportunity this season. Agree that you're looking at Lita, Gower but you've got to think Monk move into a player/coach role and Tate must be on the fringes too.

He's right of course. Perfectly logical in having players who could break into the team at any time. Nobody benefits from having players on the fringes who won't get near the team. If players can't be sold then hopefully lower league clubs will want them on loan.

These are the tough decisions he has to make.

If he brings in another 2-3 players, then that means 5-6 will need to leave. I wonder who they'll be - Allen, Dobbie, Lita, Gower, Tate?

I just hope that Lauds doesn't cut it too fine. He doesn't have experience of just how tough the Premier League can be on players and squad depth is important to rest players, rotate for cup games and, of course, there will be the inevitable suspensions, injuries and loss of form.

Obviously the guy knows what he is about in all other aspects but I hope that Curt and others will have marked his card in terms of the PL being far tougher physically than La Liga and Serie A.

Do you know how many players we used last season? Just wondering if it was more than 23.

Don't know, Casual. Agustien was really the only long term absentee that I can recall off the cuff. I seem to remember that our first team choices didn't fare too badly. Caulker missed a few and there was sporadic stuff with the other players. Orlandi missed a chunk but wasn't really a starting choice.

By and large I think we were pretty lucky with injuries but I think back to our second season the last time we were in the top flight under Tosh. Quite a number of key players suffered bad, long term injuries and that played no small part in our subsequent relegation.

27 different players last season, but included in that figure- Alfei 1 appearance,Joe Walsh 1,the goalie Moreira 1,Bessone 2 and surprisingly Caulker played 26 games.

We were very lucky with injuries for sure but you can't keep a huge squad with all the outlay that entails 'just in case'. That's why Laudrup likes versatile players who can slot into more than one position it seems.

I think you can also get better team spirit and bonding with a smaller, tighter group of players. Anyway, I'm sure ML knows what he's doing.

Much to small a squad that most managers would agree, we will be playing a dangerous game if we trim the squad down to 23 players....We were very lucky with injuries last season and should we not be so lucky this time then we could find ourselves with a problem....I understand what he is saying but to have a small squad like this is sailing to close to the wind for comfort. we need at least 5 more players than what he wants to be sure we dont come unstuck......there wont be many managers in the championship let alone the premiership that would agree with Mr Luadrup on this....

Not 23 players - 23 senior players plus youngsters - everyone in the squad will feel they have a chance of getting a game if they perform well and the youngsters will also believe that they have a chance of first team football! Have to say it makes sense to me.

you need players spare that can step in and cover and not the youngsters who are learning for the future who should be run as a seperate team....we are in the premiership now and cant take chances using kids under training if we lose a number of seasoned players...

But we will have players spare - 11 first choice, and another 12 to cover! And if any of the youngsters impress Laudrup enough then they may be given a chance to show what they can do - nothing improves performance like competition for places - understand where you're coming from Dai, but still think it makes sense! <cheers>

It is looking like Mr Laudrup is having a rethink with the news that the three GB players could be off to bigger teams. He has reported saying that we need a few experienced players before the season starts. Joe you can take has gone,he has agreed terms with brendan and its looking like we are going to find it hard to hold on to young taylor and ash and with sinclair refusing to sign a new contract then he wants to move anyway.....I hope Mr laudrup can persuade these three to stay but its going to be difficult if the big clubs offer big contracts....Its going to be a very interesting two weeks ahead by the look of it.....

what do you reckon they will do if offered big contracts by bigger clubs..? Its a no brainer. I got to hear that an offer is on the table for ash by a big club while out in the USA....Its up to the player and whats on offer at the end of the day......there is not that many bigger clubs than us who can come in for him in this country anyway and all the similar clubs can only go through the board and we wont sell to any of them unless ash kicks up a fuss that he wants to go and i cant see him doing that. Its going to take a big club to get any of our players anyaway...and should that happen then they have earned the chance.....Sinclair refused to sign a new contract but as no big club has come in for him so far he is now eager to sign......thats what players do im afraid, they hold out to see if any offers come in for him and they would have to be a bigger club than us to allow him to move....we know fulham are interested but they are not a bigger club so he cant force a move. we can sell him if we wanted though but that would be stupid....

I'd sell every player on the team @ 15million , bar none . We can't totally control what happens to the current players , but we can make money off of them . We should be rebuilding for the next crop with quality scouting , quality coaching & quality facilities because ..... were rich !
