http://www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10335~2869743,00.html Good deal for us and the player. He will be good for our young strikers and he can play in front of a club which gets 20,000 plus fans week in week out.
As long as he can give a better return than Miller in terms of goals, to be honest I'm a tad apathetic to this signing.
Hes a different type of player than Miller. Even though hes not big hes good in the air. I think Mason will in effect play the role Miller did. I think we will see Mason playing just behind a lone striker as plan A. Who starts up front I dont know. 1 year deal we cant go wrong. Get Bellamy and we will go up in my opinion.
I like this one just what we have needed a good in the air forward who will battle and win things in the air ).
A QPR Fan's Report On Helguson Good in the air but under 6 foot - is he actually a target man? 100% yes. Heidar has proven himself an expert with his back to goal. His flick-ons are measured and sensible in respect to his surroundings and helped bring the creative players into play. In the Premier League his style did not change and it helped us to great effect at times. A case in point was his domination of Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium - a notoriously difficult place to get a result. Has he played much as a lone striker for QPR? In the Championship, certainly. Neil Warnock liked to adopt a 4-3-2-1 formation that meant that Heidar forayed up front and was tasked with holding the ball and bringing others into play. The calibre of flair players such as Adel Taarabt and Wayne Routledge thrived on this service. Others have claimed he is an intelligent forward - fair? Agreed, as mentioned above his distribution is always measured. His guided headers are always intelligent and accurate and helped get the best out of the rest on the park. While others will just flick-on aimlessly, Heidar always eyes that sensible avenue - if it isn't there then the ball will stay with him until something presents itself. How did he get on last season in the Premiership We had three phases in the Premier League last season as you'll be aware. The initial good start - this was helped greatly by Heidar and a goal against Stoke and an important penalty against Chelsea were just two defining moments in a memorable season. His job didn't change and while that half a yard was sometimes lacking he adapted his game perfectly to play some of the better football I've seen from the Icelander. Any particular strengths or weaknesses? His weaknesses would definitely have to be his pace and his injury-prone nature - no question. As an intelligent footballer he tends to drop into gaps as opposed to beat people with pace and this counter-acts a lack of speed. He is prone to extended spells on the sidelines which is something we have found out and Bolton Wanderers supporters certainly took a great deal of delight in pointing out when we captured him. Overall he has been a great success at the club and should this deal not go through there is definitely a case that he would be pushing for a place in the 25-man squad. http://www.cardiff.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=288855#ixzz22Pqs3UHN
Excellent signing for you guys. To be honest I'm a bit disappointed we've let him go but I'm glad he's going somewhere he'll get more starts. If he plays too regularly he will get injured- there's no avoiding that- but for someone of his size he is simply phenomenal in the air and will be a great example to the youngsters with regards to his workrate. His goals to minutes for us last season was very good. If we dump Bothroyd on your doorstep and run away, will you take him back?
Sticking with QPR... just found this: Tommy Smith could be the next player to join Cardiff City from QPR. Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay has completed the signing of Heidar Helguson from Rangers and is looking to agree a deal for Smith after the forward was told he can leave Loftus Road. Cardiff also recently made an enquiry about Jay Bothroyd, who left them to join the R’s on a Bosman free transfer a year ago. Like Helguson, Smith knows Mackay well from their time together at Watford and has plenty of Championship experience. He moved to west London from Portsmouth for £1.5m in 2010 and played a major role in helping Rangers win promotion. But the 32-year-old made only seven first-team appearances following Mark Hughes’ appointment as manager in January and has since fallen further down the pecking order. Several other clubs have shown an interest in Smith but are struggling to meet his wage demands. http://www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/smith-could-be-next8-to-make12-cardiff-move
He's brilliant in the air and can score goals. He's proven at championship level. If he stays fit this could be a great bit of business. Another signing out of the blue as well, like the way we're doing business at the moment.
QPR fan here in peace. If you can keep him fit then HH is a great signing for you. He'll get you goals and really puts it about. I was hoping we'd keep him as he is a firm favourite with our fans, least of all for scoring against Chescum.... He doesn't miss the net when given the chance.... Also, as per Watford req..really..could we just drop betty off as well ?!
If you're playing out wide I'm not sure how involved you can be when the ball is on the other wing. He'd be another really good buy. Mackay knows him and he never let us down when he got a game last year and was excellent in our promotion season.
Perhaps this is an indication as to how we are going to play this season? "Clever player who can lay off the ball" seems to imply that he likes it at his feet, with the added bonus that he can leap? Braaaaazil its just like watching Brazil, its just like watching....
QPR fan in peace (especially as daughter just moved to Cardiff!). Always liked The Iceman. The thing I really like about him is his ability to 'hang in the air' as the footballing phrase goes. Time and again I've sat wondering how he does that as he seem to defy gravity momentarily. IMHO, good signing for you and will be a good servant, role model and should score a fair few goals and likely at critical times too. However, watch out for the odd howler where you will think, "How on earth did he miss that one?". Good luck for next season.
