Watching the Olympics (and sports I never really watch at any other time) I find myself often thinking, how the hell are they doing that? For instance, today in the shooting, how the hell can you be that accurate so often? The Canoe as well and of course the gymnastics. Yes the strength/endurance sports are incredible as well, but the technical ones blow me away, because I just cannot envisage how a human being can possibly do that (at least with something like sprinting I can imagine how you would go about getting that good). I also keep on having the tought of how lucky footballers are. They play a realtively simple sport, and are richly rewarded for it. So what do you guys thinks is (or looks like) the hardest sport to take part in?
Having caught glimpses of quite a few of the events then the diving event must be one of the hardest to undertake. All those taking part have my full admiration. The football by comparison is pi** poor and as a sport vastly over-rated as a spectacle.
When I took up swimming to save my life [regular readers will know I go sailing] I got quite good. So good that when I went to live in NZ for a year, I ended up being a swimming instructor and running a small town's [Gore and then Mataura] pool. I only started with the breast stoke and could swim forever doing that. In order to tire myself I used to swim front crawl and ended up being able to swim more than a mile of that. I didn't like backstroke, but could do it, but the one thing I couldn't fathom out was the Butterfly. I'd do about 4 strokes of it and then drown. So the sport I always say... how can they do that..[?] to is to the people who swim Butterfly.
Must be difficult to do the decathlon because of all the different disciplines. Anyone winning a medal in that event is a great all rounder and could claim to be the best athlete. Rowing requires strength and huge heart and lung capacity. Triathlon must also be a killer.
The thing with all these sports is that I can understand how you get good at them (i.e. a lot of time in the gym/on the practice course). I just cannot fathom how it is possible to do some of the things the gymnasts/divers do.
Exactly why I choose Butterfly stroke over anything else. As far as I'm concerned, it's just not swim-able. please log in to view this image
Well it's definitely not Water Polo. What a load of ****e. Just mucking about with a beachball. For me, gymnastics and diving look the hardest.
I'm guessing that's effort-wise rather than skill-wise. Gymnastics looks a rather difficult skill, as did the shooting today.
Gymnastics and diving for me too. Especially synchronised diving... how can 2 people do the exact same thing so well?!
Gymnastics on the beam, a thousand hours practice & all that stands between you & a painful slip, is a line of dust. I enjoy watching it, but it doesn't half make me cringe.
Gymnastics and rowing. I just want to say well done to Gemma Gibbons for her silver in Judo, but Judo is really a sh1t sport, all they do is hug eachother...
...and wrestle...and throw each other to the ground...and roll around... I can get on board with that.
