What was this, a former name of the league cup or something? Just found this and guess some of you were there, just i'd never heard of it... 3rd Aug 1974 - Sunderland beat Newcastle 2-1 in front of 28,738 fans at Roker Park in their first ever Texaco Cup tie. Sunderland left-back Michael gray was also born in Castletown.
It was a pre-season tournament where all the north east teams including Carlisle would play each other. It might have even included the likes of berwick and queen of the south I think. I was still at school at the time so the memories are a little hazy but it was a good way to start the season. Then pre-season tours were invented!!!

The Texaco cup was competed for in between 1970 and 1975 for English ans scottish clubs. The winners on this prestigious and much sought after competition were the mighty Newcastle United!
Hence the curiousity, i didn't have a clue, posted this, then forgot about it, without the aid of google.......**** i'm lazy.
I can actually remember playing the nick from school to watch us play Ayr in this competition. I think it was played at 1.00pm because of a gas or electricity strike??? God, I'm old.
