Sports NewsExclusive - Phillips backs Fletcher to be a hit at Sunderland
    By Nick Rostron-Pike | Tuesday, July 31, 2012
Kevin Phillips believes Steven Fletcher has all of the right credentials to be a hit at Sunderland.

The Black Cats are keen to land the Wolves hitman and are preparing a £12million bid for the Scotland striker.

And former Stadium of Light favourite Phillips claims the ex-Burnley man would be a bargain buy if Martin O’Neill can get him for that price.

If Sunderland could sign Fletcher for £10-12million then that would have to be classed as a bargain buy
    — Kevin Phillips
“Steven Fletcher was Wolves’ best player last season during a difficult campaign for the club,” Phillips told the Sports Bar. “He’s really improved his game and has showed all the attributes that Martin O’Neill is looking for.

“He’s got everything. He’s a great header of the ball, he can hold it up really well and his work rate is excellent.

“Stephane Sessegnon is a good player but he’s not a natural goalscorer. Fletcher’s all round game can get you 15-20 goals a season.

"If Sunderland could sign him for £10-12million then that would have to be classed as a bargain buy.”

Interesting. SKP should know what to look for in a striker at least. I still have doubts about him, personally, but if he comes I hope to buggery he proves me wrong.

Somebody posted a great thing on here the other day, apologies forget who it was.

'How many of us were excited at the thought of signing Quinn, and later Phillips'.

Such a true statement, with Phillips, it was a desperate leap after Connolly, the actual target, went to Feyenoord!

I was excited for Quinn, Phillips i had never heard off at the time, but imho if we didnt have Quinn, then Phillips wouldnt have been half the player he was, it was a great partnership like Gates/Gabbiandini, 1 fed off the other, if we just had the one, if wouldnt have been so potent.

I still cant see Fletcher scoring 15-20 goals next season, as a Big man like Quinn he should get a lot more assists, now i know assists take 2 to tango, you need someone else to stick it in the net, but having 2 assists for Fletcher all last season is a bit pitiful.

Looking at his stats he looks like a right selfish twat, who his teammates hardly ever pass too as when they did, he tried to do it all on his own.

If we were looking at a fox in the box type player to go along with him, I could see the value, but we are going to another big man up front, we already have Whickam, and Ji and even Noble is over 6ft, I want to see a Phillips/Defoe type player now who can get in that box and knows where the goal is.

In MON we have to trust, but i seriously have my doubts over this one (Like Gardner last year, just a feeling it wont go as planned)

Cant believe all the focus is on Fletcher, we must have more players being looked at surely?
