Thanks for that Frenchie.

I note the following in that Wiki entry:
Guinness Nigeria Plc's Water of Life initiative currently provides potable water to over 500,000 Nigerians spread across several rural communities, from Northern to Southern Nigeria. It funds scholarship and provides Guinness Eye Hospitals in three cities in Nigeria.

Do Guinness Eye Hospitals make men think that the women they are looking at are attractive?

Morning all from a brightening West West London - was a bit chilly in bandit country when I left at 9C.

Funny story about the Guinness brewery in Nigeria. Back in the early 80's I was working at a little company in Bandit central who use to sell and reny Geophysical measurement equipment and one of the technologies starting to breakthrough was Subsurface Interface Radar (SIR), the stuff you now see regulary on Time Team and murder programmes on the TV. As this was very early days of the technology, it was not easy to use and we used to hire it out with an operator. We were asked to do a survey at the Guinness brewery in Benin City as they believed that they has an erosion problem beneath the plant - so a young faced W_Y gets the gear all packed up and shipped over and followed a week or so later (it used to take that long to get all the bribes paid to get the stuff through customs). We got on sight and selected an area within the brewery just away from some massive steel vats to just take some sample measurements to understand the nature of the concrete, the re-bars and the rest of the sub-surface. On the first pass we could struggled to understand the readings, we could see a layer of concrete with re-bars about 9" thick and we used a higher frequency transmitter to even measure the re-bar thickness and spacing, but there appeared to be nothing below the concrete floor. So tried somewhere else and the same results - we checked the equipment outside and it was all as expected. At this point we got very worried, so asked the consulting engineers to open a small inspection whole in the floor. They did and after seeing the huge cavern underneath nearly all of the whole brewery, we quickly packed up the equipment and legged it, it was a death trap waiting to happen. It turned out that they used some strong cleaning agent on the floors that was washed down a drain which was just a big hole, this ate away all of the bedrock below. All that way for a couple of hours of work!

Your roving Olympic football reporter has returned! I'll ignore my travel issues and look at the football. I couldn't work out how Egypt had managed to score 2 against Brazil last Thurs as they were very wasteful against NZ, although that is perhaps a bit unfair on the NZ keeper Michael O'Keeffe who played well. I think NZ could be thrashed by Brazil unless Brazil decide to save themselves for the QF. Brazil played well against Belarus, but didn't have it all their own way and based on their performances yesterday, I think the match between Belarus and Egypt on Weds should be a good one. The crowd grew through the Egypt v NZ game until it was at it's peak during the Brazil v Belarus game and there seemed to be plenty of Brazilians there for the game - with the amount of yellow, I felt at home! For those of you who've been to Old Trafford, we were the opposite side from the dugouts about halfway between the halfway line and the goal line at the Stretford End, three rows back on the top tier. It was generally obvious which people were just there because it was the Olympics. The stewards were impressed with us looking where our entry turnstile was the day before the game (we didn't tell them we had to go past the stadium on the way to our hotel :) which was 2-3 minutes walk away). Got soaked on the way to OT tram station this morning - can't believe that they've started a cricket match on time - which is live on Sky Sports - at the other OT.

evening all :)...having returned back from Ireland at 5am today, and worked, and raced around like a loony trying to catch up with stuff, before going to a funeral this afternoon, and then heading off to the Olympic park to see Team GB beat Argentina 4-1 in the Mens' hockey :)...loved it! We also saw the first half of the match between Germany and Belgium...much closer, but we decided to duck out early. Glad we did, since Germany won lol. The park is amazing, though queues for food are utterly bonkers...Mr H waited 45 minutes for a pie! Madness. Other than that, the place is fab, the atmosphere is wonderful, the staff are incredibly well trained, the policemen and women all smile a lot and everyone is very chatty and animated. It's great! If you're not already going, i highly recommend a visit!

Next monday we're off to Eton Dorney for some sprint canoeing, and Tuesday it's football at Wembley, i'm getting quite into this olympics thing. Just a shame i won't get to see the athletics, but hey ho...

Time for sleep now, it's little miss H's 13th birthday tomorrow, and she's going to be one excited young lady...her sister gets home from a month in Israel tomorrow, and her brother is nipping home from Wales, so for the first time in 4 years, they'll all be together on her birthday, she can't wait! And then there's the small matter of Bat Mitzvah gifts coming in...she's beyond excited about those! lol.

So, night night all, sweet dreams :)

It's our 30th Wedding Anniversary today.....it only seems like yesterday that I was walking down that aisle!

Congratulations w-y - 30 years is a mighty effort in this day and age of quickie divorces. <bubbly>

Never walked down the aisle myself - we jumped the broomstick in an Outback Homestead. ;)

Morning all

Grey and damp down here today. Good to see the rumoured signings are now official. Identification of our own players in the opening game will be more testing than usual..

On Watford Player, I'm sure Jon Marks will manage - but suspect that Derek Payne's tongue is in for a torrid time. <laugh>

It's not all bad news for him. Buaben, Iwelumo and Britt will all find it harder to get playing time, and these names are at least a bit easier than Kuszczak and Kačaniklić.

Have just spotted the answer to our left back problem - she's scored her third goal for Team GB in as many matches. Sign her up!!:)

Aren't the GB ladies doing well - currently making Brazil look very ordinary.

Now that was hard work, my dearest sister bought some vouchers for my birthday in an online Golf store. Impossible to buy clothes as you cannot try them on, so had to buy accessories. At least it is done now, now for some golfing weather;)

I don't know whether this has been mentioned before, but, with the omni-present Olympics on the TV this summer, I have been indulging in a nostalgia-fest for weeks, it seems.

Every time that the Chariots of Fire theme music is played, I am instantly transported back to the early 80s at Vicarage Road, (not sure if it was called The Vic in those days) with Luther, Ross, Cally, Barnesey et al "kicking in" to the goal before the kick-off. I can see them all now with Steve Sherwood parrying the shots and occasionally one going over the bar and into the shallow steps of the Rookery.

I do not see a bunch of posh boys running along a beach........

Anybody else get this feeling?

I don't even hear the music Vic and I have the same feeling. That tune (even just the thought of it) still gives me goose pimples of anticipation. In those days we expected to beat everyone.

Don't know where you get this from, though. There isn't a beach at Peterborough, as far as I know.

For those of you with Hornet Player there is a good 10min interview of GZ by Jon Marks talking about all of the new signings and what he hopes they will bring to the team.

During it he talks about how impressed he has been with Tiny and Nos. Fitz Hall is not fit yet and it sounds as if when the season starts he will be cover for the other two.
