Been linked today with a move for 30yr old brad Jones from liverpool. Last summer, many were asking for an experienced GK to back up JR but after the performances of both Jed steer and Declan Rudd I really don't see the point in wasting good money on a position that does not need to be messed about with! Spend it on positions where we do need strengthening!
If there is truth in it, as to which I have no idea, the thought can only be that Declan now needs to be playing regularly; Brad Jones is well used to bench warming at Liverpool.
Entirely agree, this is the second keeper we've been linked to this summer (Butland being the other) and I've never understood why. Ruddy was excellent last season, Rudd stepped up well when called upon as did Steer in the FA cup. With dave Watson involved in their development I expect them to come on in leaps and bounds.
PL (who's he???) regularly told reporters last year that he was more than happy with the GK backup. Both Jed and Declan showed that they were more than capable of covering in goal. Agree that it seems strange to be spending on a position that doesn't need strengthening - unless one of them is going out on loan!!!!
I'm fine with Rudd and Steer as back up but then it would be great for one or both to go out on loan for experience. Would he want to go from being back up at Liverpool to back up at Norwich? Would he compete with Ruddy for the first team or is he one of those 'keepers who is perfectly happy to stay on the bench and just pick up his wages?
Saw him play for Liverpool last season and from the game I saw he was absolutely ****. Pointless buying another keeper I have faith in both Rudd and Steer who I think are lot more advanced experience wise then people think.
first of all, i suspect its bollocks and secondly, i frickin' hope its bollocks because he is a truly terrible goalkeeper. i laughed at ipswich fans who are deluded enough to think that scott loach is anything but bang average... well this guy is bang ****e! avoid, avoid, avoid
You mean the Blackburn v Liverpool game last season when, with Reina suspended, second choice keeper Doni got sent off early on and Jones took his place? Saved a Yakubu penalty, then conceded a penalty which Yakubu scored, then made a fantastic save to prevent an Andy Carroll own goal? However, he was much better in the subsequent game (FA Cup semi against Everton). We are in a different situation from last year, so Lambert being content with the current three is neither here nor there. Longer term, a lot of us seem to think Jed Steer will be the better of the two youngsters. Maybe that's the inside view as well; if so maybe Declan will be loaned out, or even sold, and go where he has more of a chance of actually playing. But anyway, it's just rumour and there's probably nothing in it.
Strange isn't it how, one minute we are all patting the club on the back for appointing Dave Watson, and then displaying a complete lack of trust when it comes to making decisions about goalkeepers!
i don't think anyone is doubting dave watson! i'm certainly questioning the article though. i refuse to believe that any club would rate him. i remember when liverpool signed him for something like £3m that it was bizarre to say the least as i'd never seen him have a decent game at boro! personally, i rate him as no higher than a league two keeper - that's how crap he is
Can't remember which game it was but he had a very nervous and shaky game. Unconfident goal keepers cost games and cause absolute routs, the odds of saving penalties are slim anyway so I don't care if their good against them I'd much rather have one with a clear head who makes good decisions.
The only other reason is that steer or Rudd will be sent out for the season on loan but wants to keep the numbers the same, and this is just a cheap option depending on the fee and wages! I personally don't want him dusting down the benches let alone sitting on them. As for steer, has he actually been involved atall in the 3 games we've played as in on the bench?
i'd much rather let either rudd or, more likely steer go out on loan, keep the other one here - if anything goes wrong this end we have a clause where we can call them back within 24 hours. far better option
I agree with all of this, especially as bringing another keeper would sacrifice an outfield player now that the squad has reached 25. Far more important to bring a LB in, IMO, particularly one who can also play DMF.
Quite so. I'm just wondering why people rise to the bait when they hear these rumours. Currently there are just two possibilities: (1) it's pure invention and isn't worth forum time or expenditure of energy at the keyboard; or (2) it's for real, and while it may not strike us as a sensible move, we have a good management team and CEO who will have their reasons. A third alternative, fortunately one we don't need to consider, is that the club management just hasn't a clue.
I would LOVE us to bring in a third choice keeper, willing to pick up wages as a contingency plan. Rudd and Steer are FAR too good for either of them to be third choice, and one of them will leave to get first team football if we don't give them the chance to take it on loan. Let one out on loan (or one on a 3 mth loan, then the other out for rest of season when they return) and in 2-3 years time we will genuinely have the best set-of-3 goalkeepers in the country. If we play them right, between Rudd and Steer we can secure our own first choice goalkeeper from 2014-2020 from one and a massive transfer fee for the other. Play it badly and they will both leave Joe Lewis style. Brad Jones for NCFC reserves would IMO be one of the best footballing decisions of all time!!!
