http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11719/7951015/ Too early in my opinion. Was one of if not my favourite City player since I started watching the Tigers in '99. Lovely bloke too. Good luck Big Ben. Never really got over that twat Rachubka breaking his leg.
http://www.football365.com/league-one/7951015/Burgess-hangs-up-his-boots? Burgess hangs up his boots Tranmere have terminated the contract of striker Ben Burgess after the 30-year-old decided to retire from football. Burgess only joined Rovers part way through pre-season from Notts County and has previously had spells at Blackpool, Hull and Cheltenham. "I'm obviously disappointed that it hasn't worked out with Ben but it isn't a decision he will have made easily and it is one we have to respect," Rovers manager Ronnie Moore told the club's official website. "Ben feels he is unable to play at 100 per cent and doesn't want to carry on at less than his best. "He's been a model professional while he has been here and I wish him the best of luck in his new life outside of football." Burgess added: "I'd like to thank everyone at Tranmere Rovers and I'm really sorry it hasn't worked out."
Never rated him. Ponderous, no goalscoring instinct, easily dominated by big defenders etc Lg1 at best
Dominated by big defenders????? For a big guy he had good technical ability, scored some belters for us. Him and Danny Allsop were great for us back then, remember beating Leeds 2-0 at the KC in a pre0-season friendly and they both scored. Hope he does well in whatever he decides to do.
Check out this video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_IeOSbi_E8&feature=youtube_gdata_player I was looking on you tube for the over head kick he scored in a 5-0 win at the kc. It was September time as I took my old man for his birthday and think it was league two. Any way here is another goal as well as a couple of lads from gilberdyke showing their football knowledge.
Many happy memories of Ben from 2003/04 especially and he played his part in getting us started on our move up the leagues. It was great to see him come back after what was a bad injury and still play a part for us in the Championship. Good luck to him for the future.
let's see how many agree with you... because I bet there's not too many. Held his own at Blackpool while there.
League 1 at best, I would maybe agree with that but then again he was a steady player for Blackpool. But when he mostly played for us that was the level we were at and he played his part in us getting started on our move up the leagues. 2003/04 I think he got about 18 goals for us. No goalscoring instinct my arse.
Ah Big Ben, i remember seeing him on the concourse at Preston waiting for a pie. This was while he still played for Blackpool. It was great he'd still come and watch us, & travel at that, even though he finished with us a few years before. Good luck to him.
He scored 24 in 70 league games for us, we could do with someone who's as ponderous and lacking in goalscoring instinct as that now. And he played 31 games for Blackpool in the season they got promoted to the Premier League, so he was obviously doing something right.
Great player loved watching him and allsopp in the promotion season both played big parts for us that season! What happened to DA?
Did he get many headers at set pieces like you would expect from a player of his height? Was he a target man inna Kevin Davies stylee, who was the hub of our attack? He looked good when we were beating poor teams in Lg 2.
Nearly all of those goals and games were in the lower leagues when we were a big fish in a small pond. Matty Fryatt has goalscoring instinct. Keith Edwards had it, Waggy had it. Burgess, Allsop, Walters, Altidore. McLean don't.
My abiding memory will be when we faced top of the table, unbeaten Oxford at a point WELL into the season who had let in something like 10 goals combined and BBB and Allsopp literally ripped them to pieces. There was one fantastic move from a long ball when it looked like it was going to Danny, he dumied, BBB picked it instantly and laid it off for the on-running Allsopp to smash past the keeper. The defenders literally had no idea what happened and just looked on bemused. Immense memory and best wishes to him.
