FORMER Sunderland striker Nicklas Bendtner has been slapped with a near-£5,000 fine for various driving offences after being stopped in South Tyneside. The Danish star, who was on-loan at the Black Cats from Arsenal last season, was pulled over by police in his Audi Q7 on a slip road on the A184 at Whitemare Pool roundabout. Officers checked the 24-year-old’s details and discovered that he didn’t have a driving licence, was not insured to drive the £40,000 car and his licence plates were not registered. Bendtner – whose shirt number was 52 at Sunderland and Arsenal – was due at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer charges of driving without the correct licence, using a vehicle without insurance and two counts of driving a vehicle with a registration mark that does not conform with regulations. He did not show up at the court, and magistrates found the case proved in his absence. Rachael Dodsworth, prosecuting, said: “It was 6.50pm on May 13 when police stopped the defendant’s silver Audi Q7. “There was more than two people in the car and there were no ‘L’ plates. “There was no trace of the registration number, and there was no insurance on the car.” The court heard that when asked why there was no insurance or trace of the plates, Bendtner said: “I have a friend who sorts that out for me.” Bendtner, who was linked with a move to Spanish side Celta Vigo yesterday, had no licence after failing to re-apply for it after a 56-day driving ban for speeding in February. Magistrates fined him £4,750 and added six points to his licence. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs. It is the latest in a string of scrapes Bendtner has been involved in. In March, he was cleared of vandalising cars parked in Stowell Street, Newcastle at the city’s magistrates’ court. He was initially charged with five counts of criminal damage alongside Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole. Cattermole eventually accepted conditional discharges for the £4,168.27 damage. The same court banned Bendtner from driving for 56 days after he was caught driving his Porsche 911 at 103mph. Last year, he was also involved in an incident in a Copenhagen pizza parlour after his credit card was declined and he demanded someone else paid for the takeaway. Twitter: @ShieldsGazCrime
