In terms of long and short passing range it has to be scholes wasted out wide by england.

Paul Scholes is the best passer of a ball of all time, everybody who has lived to watch him either live or on television should feel privileged, I have absolutely no doubt about it that if Scholes was playing against Italy, Pirlo wouldn't have been able to dictate the game as he did.

On a side note, Beckham is still the best crosser of a ball in football, which is technically passing.

With Scholes, its not his range of passing that impresses me (it does, but loads of players can strike a pass well) its his timing...He has a crazy knack of being able to time his pass to cross an opponent the split second his concentration lapses. It makes him so hard to play against - you know where the ball is going and yet you still can't cut it out!

I can only assume from the fact Zidane wasn't even mentioned that this thread is a wind up.

I didn't mention him because the question was who is the best. The best was Scholes. Even Zidane would tell you that. Zizou would most definitely be up there though, if it was a top 5 or 10.

I'd still rather have Xavi in my team to be honest. He's class from anywhere on the pitch and has amazing close control of the ball.

Xavi, Scholes or Pirlo. Take your pick. All rarely give the ball away and have a fantastic range. All can hit short, medium and long passes with unerring accuracy. I'd struggle to split them.

If I was really pushed, I'd go Xavi.

And his vision, he'll see and make a pass that no one else will see. Like his assist for Rooney's first goal against AC Milan in 07? Scholes can just read the game faster than almost anyone.

Read what anybody in football has to say about him. Even the likes of Pirlo, Xavi and Zidane coo over him. How the England side has not been built around him for the past 20 years I'll never know.

There's no contest in my opinion. Scholes absolutely wipes the floor with Xavi and Pirlo, forget the tika taka style of Barcelona, Xavi is often outshone by Alonso for Spain. Pirlo is getting a lot of hype due to how well he performed at Euro12 but let's be honest, he's in the same league as the Gerrard's, Alonso's and Fabregas' of this world, he just does what he does with a little more panache, but to the same effect, in fact, I'd probably put an on-form Cesc Fabregas up there with Scholes before I would Pirlo.

All of these players have great technical ability and vision but Scholes has the ability to execute any pass from any position on the pitch at any given moment before any other player sees it, there's nobody like him.

No bias from the Man U fans on this one eh <laugh>

To be fair we'd be the same if asked to pick the best striker England has produced.........

I'd agree with Shearer, he was devastating at his peak and I believe football has evolved since the days of Greaves.

I probably have more to base my opinion on of Scholes than I do Xavi or Pirlo as I haven't taken in almost every single Barcelona/AC Milan/Juventus game for the last 15 years, but I've seen enough of all three to believe neither of them match Scholes for passing ability. I'd have mentioned Giggs instead of Gerrard if I was being biased, on the plus side though for Xavi, he has been the best from May 2011 to January 2012, when Scholes temporarily retired.
