it seems like these two new lads signed under the radar and the press bumpf about Carroll and Ba seem to be really rather good.

a few have been saying we need to sign this and spend that, a bit like last summer, but have we sneaked in again and picked up good players where no-one was looking ?

so far we have signed three, none big names, no big transfer fees, again a bit like last summer. I am actually beginning to wonder if the whole Ba release clause and Carroll to toon and even the DeJong / Douglas saga, aren't just a bit of corporate dis-information to stop our real dealings being followed and high-jacked.

so I'd like to know if anyone has seen a good portion of these friendly games and what their opinion is on the new lads ? I haven't seen, I just read a lot about the games, in the form of reports and forums.

The two new signings look like younger, rawer versions of Tiote and Cabaye, in my opinion. Tavernier has looked ok, so has Abeid.

must admit i hadn't even considered others stepping up, such as Abeid, who has also looked quality by all accounts.

although not technically new signings they will hit the first team squad as if they are.

i feel good right now about all this, it looks like our top players really want to stay with us and our new players / emerging youngsters are hungry and talented

Me too. We seem to have a very good mix of experience and promising youth players. If we can get through the rest of the transfer window with the current squad intact and maybe 2 more coming in, I will be a very happy Obi.

Yep, I think we'd just about handle a lengthy european campaign and maintain league form with the current squad, but I'm hoping we add some more quality if we can. I'm probably more relaxed than some about not getting anymore players <ok>

I think the thing is that we got rid of five or six, of which only two actually played last season as part of our 18 that we must put out on match day.

We have now added two who look very much like they will be part of that 18 and in fact look better than the two who departed, so (as Tash points out often) the stats of 6 out, 2 in are actually misleading and need to be more closely looked at before bums get twitchy and tears end up in pints ... our match day squad just subtly improved and we got £4mil quid for something else too.

This doesn't even consider Good of course, signing number three this summer.

We are desperate for a centre half. Taylor is class but never sees out the season. Williamson has proved he can do a job but we need more. 3 first team centre halfs won't cut it if we are to push on.

Curtis Good is a centre half.

And, I don't think we can really use price or age as a judgement of quality with signings at NUFC

18 / 19 is easily old enough to be ready for 1st team action in the Prem as a number of players have demonstrated and at toon price doesn't seem to accurately reflect quality.

my point is that we knew very little about some of our top players from the last couple of seasons, but it turns out our club hierarchy did and the players have turned out to be absolute crackers, so I don't see why this shouldn't happen again.

There is no way Curtis good has been signed as first team cover. He is primarily in the development squad. Perch will play at centre half ahead of Good. He may well turn out to be a great player but we won't see much of him in the first team this season. Reme street will probably be above him in the peckin order.

    - no, I think he would be fifth in line ? After Colo, Willo, Saylor, Tavernier ?

I do take your point though, it would be good to see someone who was challenging for a full time first 11 berth and that might not be the case for either Tavernier or Good this season, but, I do think that Good can push for the first 18 pretty soon, particularly when all the extra games are factored in, and also will be an improvement on the players who left
