That is BOLLOCKS! It's the British National anthem, NOT the English. You're happy to be represented under the GBR flag so learn the ****ing anthem! I hate that nationalistic ****e, I'm English and I'm as proud of that as you are being Welsh, no problem with that at all, but we are all competing under the GREAT BRITIAN flag, so cut out the nationalistic crap and be British! Where in the rules does it say you MUST sing the national anthem then? And you call my argument weak. Im a proud Welshman but am barely able to speak a word of it. But what exactly does that have to do with anything? How does it make my argument weak? For every man that stands there for England but doesn't decide to sing the anthem, does that make him disrespectful to his country?
You know perfectly well that the National Anthem is not "the English" national anthem. It's the anthem of the United Kingdom of which you are most likely a citizen. It is quite possible to be proudly Welsh AND proudly British/UK, as many of your fellow Welshmen are. IMO it is you who need to "stop whining and grow up ffs".
We have had this topic before and my opinion hasn't changed. It is not a national anthem. Wales is still subject to a monarchy, as is Scotland and NI. So its just a much their anthem. I do find it a dirge. It was written in 1619. I feel if its going to be played before events, sporting or otherwise, then you either all sing it or don't. Personally I don't see the necessity to be reminded of your origins or allegiance. So I would get rid of it altogether. My son is in the Army and it is played so many times because as a Coldstreamer he is part of the Queens household regiment. And it must be played in the Queens presence. I thought Giggs was a twat last night. He prattled on beforehand about how he had been captured by the Olympic spirit but cynically in my opinion, deliberately didn't sing it. So lets get rid of the anthem. Its a sporting occasion only and by its absence you would be removing a platform for ignorant twats like Giggs to perform on.
When I said British/English it wasn't intended as a snide comment, just what both teams sing. And seeing as iv never had any reason to sing it iv never felt the need to learn it. You on the other hand sing it at all international games so are bound to know it. But like I said, just because they are standing there not singing does not make them disrespectful nor does it mean they are not acknowledging it. There are many ways to act disrespectfully, not singing is not one of them.
I think it stemmed from the fact that ALL the Welsh players were pointedly NOT singing, it looked like some sort of protest. I think that's the basic point. Right or wrong that's how it looked. I still have memories of 100,000 people at the Cup Final the year of the Bradford fire, singing ABIDE WITH ME!!! Not a dry eye in the place!! On a bit of a different track, I just wish we could sing our National Anthem at our own speed, I'm fed up with some opera singer or some git from Britians got Talent or whatever messing it about, putting their own spin on it, it generally means it's slowed down and the crowd have finished it about 2 minutes before they have!!! What a reflection on our society that you have never been REQUIRED to learn it and sing it! I give up.
There is not a a single Thai that does not know their national anthem and they are extremely proud of their nation. If you are a foreigner and want to obtain Thai citizenship, part of that process (as well as being able to talk Thai for a 45 minute conversation ) is to sing all of the Thai National anthem. Luckily it is short and actually pretty damned good (even you don't understand a word of it
i literally couldn't give a funk if the welsh boys chose to not sing it or they did. i don't care if the english lads don't sing it. i don't care if its a british anthem, english anthem or whatever... national anthems are the most pointless thing i can think of. it is not representative of the people who live in our country anyway. i am not for or against the monarchy - i'd rather keep it for tourism purposes - but why should i sing about the queen or king? i'd rather sing about the nations green and pleasant land (hint) or not at all. it is an obscene national anthem - it is boring and lifeless - and it does my head in. i am proud of my nation but i don't need to sing some song to declare it.
Boring and lifeless? On the contrary, dignified, inspiring and resonant with history, evocative of so much to take pride in. This time I really DO give up!
how can anyone seriously say that though? have you heard the thing?!?! i remember speaking to an aussie mate who reckons that he'd want to slit his wrists if he was british, having to hear that bloody anthem whenever you've just won something, and i completely agree. its utterly miserable, its outdated (by about 300 years) and its got nothing going for it. it needs to be changed.
does anybody know if giggs and bellamy actually sung the welsh national anthem when they represented wales?
How exactly is it not representative of the people who live in this country?? It's about our monarchy, which most countries in the civilised world wish they still had. Just look at the last Royal wedding/Jubilee, love it or hate it, it was seen by billions all round the world, crowds turned out in their millions, foriegn TV stations were camped out for weeks to get their story. I would rather listen to the Anthem, than listen to the crap that the likes of Elton John, Mcartny and Annie Lennox spewed out at the Jubilee concert, now that was embarrassing!! ILD OTBC ILD OTBC
It just seems that evrybody is jumping on their back yet don't know the previous! Also do they know whether they have sung it at Cup Finals? seems as though its something from nothing, i mean Cashley Cole hadn't sung the anthem for 10 years till this summer, was there a fuss?
It's a personal choice which I won't deny anyone, but these players wanted to be part of the experience then seemed to be making a protest. Wrong time, wrong place. Can you remember the storm that broke over the Welsh Secetary, tory bloke was his name Redmond? been in the job about 2/3 days, got sent to the Welsh Assembly, didn't know the anthem and was filmed "la la laring"! Poor bloke got slated for not learning the words, when the boots on the other foot the Welsh use it kick people!!!!!! That is all. ILD OTBC
