    Quotes from The Chronicle...

ALAN PARDEW insists Jose Enrique’s attitude remains “top-class” amid speculation over the Spaniard’s future, and with sources in France claiming Newcastle have failed in a bid for Toulouse left-back Cheikh M’Bengue.

Talks over a new deal with Enrique – who still has a year left on his contract – will not resume until United are mathematically safe from relegation.

The 25-year-old has been linked with moves to AC Milan and Bayern Munich, and earlier this week found himself unwittingly embroiled in controversy when former Liverpool star Phil Thompson told Norwegian TV that a move to Liverpool was a “done deal”.

That has embarrassed the Anfield club, and Toon boss Pardew was quick to refute the suggestion that an agreement was in place with the Reds, stressing his desire to retain Enrique.

Reports on the Continent claiming Newcastle have had a £5m bid for M’Bengue – with whom they were linked a month ago – rejected by Toulouse have fuelled speculation that United are preparing for life after Enrique.

But Pardew is determined to hang on to the defender, who he insists has stayed fully committed to the Magpies cause throughout uncertainty over his future.

“The lad’s attitude is great, but that’s what you’d expect from top-class professionals,” Pardew said.

“It’s like this argument that footballers get paid too much money now, that they don’t care.

“But put a ball in front of a player and he wants to win it, regardless of how much he’s earning or what his contract situation is. “We’ve got committed players here, there’s a great team spirit and we want to see it home now. We want to finish strongly, and I think we can.

“We’ve done some good work this week.

“We were a bit disappointed with the Aston Villa game. It’s one of those where it’s hard to understand why it didn’t catch light in any period.

“It was a flat game, although both teams had good levels of motivation.

“There was a lot of nervousness on their part, and on ours, and we were a bit light.

“But I think we’ll be a lot stronger on the bench against Manchester United, on Tuesday, with a situation where we can change it in terms of personnel and senior players.

“Shola Ameobi’s scan came back clear, which was obviously very important for us.

“Someone missing like Shola can make a big difference.

“He was the man-of-the-match in the win against Wolves in my opinion.

“You’re going to get injuries and suspensions that affect you and your performance.

“But as we head towards Tuesday in preparation for Manchester United, we have Stephen Ireland training and we think Shola will be fine – but we’ll wait and see on Sunday.

“Everybody else who played at Villa has come through.

“The mood in the camp is determined.”

I'm still on the fence as to whether he's staying or not. Interesting that they mentioned Cheikh M’Bengue. Does anyone know anything about him?

We'll have to wait and see, Pardew wouldn't dare commit to saying he won't go in case another Carroll happens.

Sorry to stray of Jose here but does anybody else wonder if Shola's erratic effort is due to confidence? Pardew keeps praising Shola publicly every chance he gets and its possible he's doing this to get his confidence up so he'll produce better performances.

Yeah it's quite blatant, I think some people are under the impression that Pardew is doing this so he can justify buying one striker instead of two this summer. We've heard it all before really but to be fair to Shola, he does a lot more than people give him credit for. I. Still think he's poor overall and should defo be 3rd/4th choice striker next season.

    From NUFC.com
    ____________

PS: quoted in the local press on Wednesday, Alan Pardew responded to the Enrique/Liverpool claims by saying:

"There’s definitely no deal between the clubs – 100 per cent. He’s under contract here until next summer, and we hope to open talks on a new deal as soon as possible.

“That’s where we are. We want to keep our best players, and Jose’s one of them. As far as anything being a done deal, that’s not true.

“We want Jose to stay. Nothing’s changed.”

So that's that then - read my lips, he's not going - from the man who assured us that Andy Carroll was staying...

Anybody remember Archie Andrews? The wooden puppet?

Opened his mouth but his lips didn't move. Has anybody ever seen Pardews lips move when he speaks? He's just Ashley's version of Archie. A wooden puppet that say's what the guy who's hand is up his arse tells him to say.
