And then he took Liverpool to their worst position and worst points tally for 50 and 30 years (or something like that) respectively!
Liverpool were famous for always giving managers time and not expecting Rome to be built in a day (or even Roma to be beaten in a pre season game). It was a big part of our attraction that those behind the scenes kept quiet and let those that knew about football deal with the football. Its another reason we are becoming a franchise just like any other. Sad but true.
Regardless of his abject record last year? I am all for respecting his devotion to the club, but where do you draw the line? What if he was still in charge this season and Liverpool finished mid-table again...according to you he should just be told to carry on because he is a club legend! That is wrong in my opinion!
True but it would have been a far worse points tally the year before. Plus it certainly wasn't the worst football played at Anfield over that period (not by a long way) although possibly some of the worst finishing I've ever seen Hardly a problem that was insurmountable.
Managers live and die by the performance of the players, the players that they buy and select! With that in mind, Dalglish had to go because the results were just not acceptable...As I said earlier, where do you draw the line with the whole club legend thing?
Well I certainly don't draw the line after 12 months of being in the job full time of course managers live and die by results but how long do you a give a guy to develop (or even stabilise) what was previously a totally rudderless ship? Where do YOU draw the line because I think my line is a bit less short term than most other peoples seems to be these days.
What good has sticking to the "Liverpool Way" done us since the 80s? Very little, in fact I'd argue its held us back. The game has moved on from the 80s and we seem to not want to. We want to keep doing things like the 70s/80s and everything to be the same as then but THAT is what is hold us back. It doesn't work anymore and its why our rivals have got so far ahead. Any other top club in this day and age would of took the same action as we did if their Manager failed so badly in the league as Dalglish did. His performance was awful. he was tactically inept, could pick the right team, played terrible players whilst freezing out the only player who was scoring (Maxi) consistently, wasted a HUGE sum of money on players who we all knew wouldn't be good enough in the main before we'd even bought them, and no idea how to use sunbstitutes. Being a legend and the greatest ever player doesn't make you immune to these failings, and if you fail, you lose your job. There were not even any signs that suggested he was learning by any of his mistakes, and would put them right if he was given more time, in fact t was quite the opposite. Henry did what was best for LFC and he deserves credit for that. Some fans problem is that they elevate Dalglish above the club because of who he is. Sometimes it seemed that Dalglish came before the club even though he was the first person to say no-one is bigger than the club. The game has evolved and its time for us, and the Liverpool Way, to evolve to all we'll always be in the shadows.
So he only worked part-time hours then in his first 6 months. This "he only got 12 months" is utter drivel. He had a good 18months andd was excellent for the first 6 and then average to poor thereafter. People would be a lot more cut and dried on this if it wasn't Dalglish.
It is a fine line between who to blame, i.e. the players or the manager! To be blunt, the performances last year were dire, and something needed to change. So, what can you do? Sack the players? Nope! There was only one alternative available as far as I am concerned, and that was to get rid of Dalglish! As someone else has pointed out on here, if it was any other manager, then there would be no question or argument as to whether he should have been sacked, but because it's Dalglish then people seem to adopt the attitude that he can be forgiven cos he is a club legend! That is wrong and unprofessional in my opinion!
I guess I would draw the line under the fact that Dalglish managed Liverpool to their worst position and points tally for 50/30 years! That to me is a good enough reason to get rid! Liverpool went from being third only to United and Chelsea results wise under Dalglish in the last half of 2010, to 8th in the league! That to me is not stabilisation, that is going backwards...he did his bit, it wasn't good enough, time to move on I think!
And yet the irony of all that you have written is that the most successful manager since our dominance of the 80's has been there exactly BECAUSE the united board didn't react too hastily and sack him after a rough few years. THEY showed the vision and patience to stand by Fungus when all around them were calling for his head Why may I ask is the "Liverpool Way" holding us back? Why then is BR saying he will absolutely follow the values and traditions that make our club such a wonderful thing? He's saying it because that's exactly the right thing to do and good on him for that. I hope his enthusiasm and confidence in the "Liverpool Way" continues all the things I do love about being a Red. Personally I'm delighted that he doesn't think it is just a fad or a trend that has "gone out of fashion". Kenny has never and will never be "elevated" above the club but one of the reasons he is so loved and respected in these parts is because despite his legendary status he NEVER felt or believed he was bigger than the club. Had he not believed he could improve that team further this season he undoubtedly would have hung up his coat and walked away. The owners should IMO have at least let him fulfil his contract and then walk away with his head held high.
Christ why did Henry open his mouth. I was a Kenny supporter and would have given him another year and hated the feckers on here & elsewhere that seemed to take joy out of his failing last season. Ok to be angry at performances including KD's but to be actually enjoying attacking him??? Anyway Henry & Co get to hire & fire who they like, when they like. You don't like it? Stump up a couple of hundred million & you get to hire who you want. Be a different matter if like the previous they were getting us into debt but they're not. So until then they're the boss. For those that wanted KD gone? you got what you wanted so shut up. For those like me who didn't? Tough! It happened so shut up about it. We have a new manager in new season lets focus on that shall we?
But yet again you fail to take into account where the club was when he came in. So a bad few months from Jan to May (in which we still got to TWO cup finals) earned him the sack. In your mind that's fair enough in my mind that means the new man stands **** all chance of surviving and being allowed to "build" a team. Let's just hope then that BR never has a bad run of games eh again Fergie keeps springing to mind for some reason...I can only dream oif how good life may have been if some of you lot had been on uniteds board all those years ago
Actually he had a good first twelve months taking us from just above the relegation zone to just a few points behind Chelsea in fourth when the transfer window shut at the end of Jan. So we had a terrible run of results between Feb and May...we also were incredibly unlucky, played some excellent football and did just happen to get to two cup finals which I enjoyed thoroughly. Whether Dalglish or not I would have supported whoever had done that and accepted that league form wasn't good enough and needed to improve. I will give BR exactly the same support I gave Kenny. I will criticise him when he gets thngs wrong (just as I did with Kenny) and I will praise him when things go well (just as I did with Kenny) but I will not expect bloody miracles and hound him out when the going gets tough. I suspect there will be plenty of people sharpening the knives as soon as we have a few bad results anyway.
Evening sexy where u been all my life ok ok I'll shut up now DF...think I've had my say but fighting a losing battle eh So....West Brom away eh...I liked Steve Clarke too...just saying...
MFG always does this...drops a bomb on the board and then buggers off and watches the rest of us snarl about it I need to learn not to react.... Must not react... Must not react.... Must not react.......
Lol; that was a bit stroppy tart of me to be fair Billy This video sums up how this topic makes me feel now!
No you're right mate I know its never going to change anything. And my love for Kenny doesn't mean I won't give R Brendan my full support either as you know just need the season to start now eh
Bloody right. Can not wait for it to begin; hopefully karma will give us all the goals from last year as well as this years! Just want to see us play well & win some games . Just start from there and then onwards & upwards!
