It's comments like that that merely support the merit of the original comment!!

United and Liverpool do have the most glory hunters because they have been the most successful clubs for such a long time. Chelsea, City etc will invariably accumalate more fans due to their recent successes too. However a rivalry is relative. Most people outside the north east couldn't give a **** about Sunderland / Newcastle but to the fans involved it is massive.

It could be argued that Man City / United and Spurs / Chelsea are now bigger games than Liverpool / United due to recent history and I mean that from a neutral stand point not a fan's point of view.

I can't see why a game between a top 2 team and a team that's spent the last few years outside the title race would interest glory hunting asian kids. Maybe you're right but I can't see it.

The Tyne-Wear derby goes back hundreds of years to a battle between the cities in the 1500's or something which I won't bore you with the details with. I don't think the NLD is big at all because it has only become a big game since the 2 sides became evenly matched = not true hatred. NUFC V SAFC is massive even when divisions separate us.

Personally I'm a bit surprised by the comments. Being honest, I (and probably many others) have assumed that nobody outside of the north east has the slightest interest or acknowledgement of our derby. I say that because I don't really take that much interest in other derbies and see a bias in Sky towards the big clubs and London (understandable). I suppose they just don't mean much to me. I've always just assumed all derbies are a personal thing to supporters i.e. each clubs fans thinks theirs is the biggest.

It is undoubtedly our biggest games of every season, regardless how either team is doing. Even when we were bang up there challenging Man U for the title, we'd still look for the mackem first. To be honest I have struggled to enjoy them for a long time now (even though we have much the upper hand in recent years). The build up to it is just a bit sickening. The thought of going into work to see a few gloating mackems is just hell on earth.

Mind they are just a kick fest and there is some naughty **** goes on from sides. You can almost guarantee someone will go over the ball in the first 10mins and then its party time! The refs must hate it when they get named because its just silly at times. We then argue for the rest of the season about who has had the worst end of the refs ****ty stick.

And there, in a nutshell, is a text book description of every local derby in the world!

    Pouch nailed our derby.

I swear it tears me to pieces, as soon as the game before ends the sky goes black and there's nothing else.

Our game lacks the stature of many of the London derbies, and the North West ones, but it doesn't lack passion.

Ours is the biggest and most fierce derby, it isn't the 'biggest game that's a derby' though, not by a distance.

Delighted to see our game given credit here though <ok>

I have quite a few geordie mates and a few mackems and thus have been told all about your derby. I believe that it may not be the biggest but is certainly the most fierce and means the most to the fans. I love watching it. The atmosphere from the fans transfers onto the pitch and makes for a great game.

    Cheers.

I do think it comes across, even on TV, what it means to us, as one of that lot mentioned above, even when one of us is far better than the other, the game loses none of it's feeling.

Both Cities just buzz for a week beforehand, you know it's derby week, a lot of people in the North East only have football and regional pride to get excited about, add to that hundreds of years of dispute, including royalty taking sides, and you have a real melting pot.

I've had the privilege of being at all but 2 of them, home & away over the last 20 years or so, and the noise and buzz when you walk into either stadium still amazes me to this day.

Well my geordie mates (sorry :) ) have said they will take me to one in the newcastle end. Look forward to it to hear the atmosphere. With Chelsea we have derbies with Spurs, Arsenal, West Ham and many others and the atmosphere is always fantastic but with the North East derby there is that extra spice, hatred and fight which makes it special.

Yeh I love the banter between opposite fans. And the banter at matches makes the atmosphere great. I love going to the away games where you have a great laugh.
