How many loan players did we have at this stage last season and how many now?

And last year you thought the team that started against Southampton was better than the previous year as well!!

I hope you are right but I have to say I cannot understand the blind enthusiasm - Cranie, Austin, Green - On what basis are you assuming they are better? I am extremely hopeful that Austin will be all plus more of what we expect of him, he could be another Nunez in promising lots and delivering little, we just do not know at the moment.

Green better than Clayton? Cranie better than Lees? I believe Lee's started at RB against Southampton - correct me if I am wrong...

I wouldn't feel confident if the season were to start next week with the current squad, I feel a lot depends on who the next 2-3 are going to be.

As for a previous comment about Maynard I too feel he is over rated and personally I would prefer to see any funding available used on a proven goal scorer like Beckford.

The same Beckford who needed more chances than any other striker to score goals in League One?

Which other strikers and what stats are you using for this? The same Beckford that played 126 games and scored 72 goals for us, the same Beckford that scored 31 goals that season including a goal that knocked scum out of the FA cup and the same Beckford who scored the winning goal on the final day of the season that earned us promotion.

Who would you sign who is better than Beckford and who WOULD be available at a reasonable price??

Yea and I thought it was. We didn't seem as organised and we were desperate for an LB and never signed one. We also sold players from that first team in the same season

And no, lees didn't start that game, Connelly did

Yea, I agree. I don't know why people all of a sudden dislike Beckford and do not believe he is what we need whereas before we came to terms with him leaving he was the best thing ever

Well let's hope for some positive takeover news, a couple of WOW signings (I remember you also saying in a previous post you were waiting for the signing that makes you think WOW) and then we need not have a debate about if the team is stronger or not <ok>

For me I would have been looking for a Beckford and Aluko type double signing along with someone like Peltier or better at RB

I like Beckford obviously, but in League 1 he had players like Snodgrass (in League 1!) feeding him chance after chance. I don't think he'd get any more than Becchio in the Championship, but he certainly has the pace we're currently lacking and is a big game player so I'd take him back.

Ristac, Lees didn't make his debut for us until Bradford in the League Cup.

IMO we have signed solid players so far who will do a job without fuss. Now we are in desperate need of the 2 or 3 'crucial' and 'excellent' signings warnock spoke of to take the squad to promotion challenging

The same Beckford that basically sulked for 3 months from January (after OT) until Bristol Rovers as the team slid down the table.

Towards the end of that season one of the posters on the old 606 posted the chances to goals ratio of the top 6 or so scorers in L1 and Beckford's ratio was by far the worst.

No doubt he scored lots of goals, but missed many easier opprtunities and many of the goals were in games where we scored more than one while our opponents did not score any. As a result, not his fault, many of the goals were not that meanigful/valuable to the team.

No doubt he scored goals that won some big games but he also underperformed in many big games.

He was treated very poorly by the club in terms of a contract offer but I was not that disappointed when he left.

As for an alternative signing, your logic is somewhat flawed in that I don't believe he is available at a reasonable price.

Yea, I am still waiting for that WOW signing. When that comes and I think it needs to come then I think a lot of fans will be feeling a lot better about the coming season. Hopefully Colin can make this signing soon

I think we are still missing Beckford. We have never replaced him adequately, I think even in our first season back in the champ we were missing him although Becchio scored so many as well as the rest of the team. The thing I like about him is the fact you always have a threat regardless of whether you are defending for the whole game you can still break and he will still get you a goal. I have also always stated that although he is selfish it suits the team much more because they can be more balanced. I have explained this previously why and I won't again but we still need to replace him and whether that be bringing him back or getting another player similar isn't an issue for me.

Although maybe I am slightly biased towards Beckford

Josh, you must be speaking 'Stralian there as I have no idea what that means.

Please explain it to us using mainstream English. ;)

As I said I've explained it before and can't be bothered to again. But put simply, because of the type of striker he is you can have a team that is more balanced defensively. If you have done any high level coaching or been coached at any high level you might understand it a little bit better but as I said I really cannot be bothered to go into it properly again

Err, that book has nothing to do with coaching, but well worth a read. <ok>

Its not that valuable, I am just at work so a break for Not606 is fine for me... :)

Its just that I have explained it before and can't be ****ed explaining it again just for you not to understand. If you cannot see how a goal poacher, especially one with pace helps a team's balance, its not my problem. Teams work as units, or at least good ones do and that includes when you defend and it includes the midfielders and strikers as well and not only that it includes when you have finally won the ball back a quick out and an instant threat upfront to worry the other team so that you do not spend the full 90 minutes defending. A player like Becchio, regardless of how good he is will not provide this and it makes it harder that he is generally up there by himself or sometimes even working back as well
