    Well done to the young'uns.

Now I know that there are some on here who delight in getting their hands on the latest mobile phone, but I have one that lets me speak to people if I want to, or send them a text and that suits me fine. I did use it once when in Corsica to go onto the internet so as find out a Watford score, only to discover that my brief connection cost me £5.

Today my notice of the monthly charge came through and for some reason it had gone up 60%. Getting onto the helpline, I am told that it is because my contract has expired, so they had taken away the advantages I agreed a year ago. Not happy to pay the extra, I am told that I need to up-grade. You will have to have one of our new smart phones if you don't wish to pay more, but you can have that free of charge.

So seeing as they can only send it somewhere with a UK postcode I have to arrange for my daughter to bring it out next month. There will be a perfectly good phone sitting here idle while I fight this new trial being brought into my life. Why I cannot have an old phone that is cheaper than a new phone seems strange, but then I do not try to understand the minds of those in corporate madness any longer.

OFH - We should swap, my corporate madness will only let me have an old mobile like that you desire - if you look on the internet, my current model was considered crap 8 years ago. Of course this creates much hilarity amongst the W_Y clan who all have iPhones (2 of which i fund) and my mates rip it out of me with this old phone. But at least it does not cost me a penny! But it only makes calls and texts and I quite like that....

Right, I am off to the land of counterpane as I am being picked up at 03.45 for our invasion of Cork...I am sure to have some stories for Wednesday! COYH

My ancient mobile finally gave up the ghost recently so that I was forced to replace it. The new one apparently accesses the Internet and has things called apps on it...though this could be a misspelling of apples. It has a QWERTY keyboard designed for someone with fingers the size of needles and a sort of direction-finding pad the size of a mouse's ar*ehole. The fact is I use it exactly the same as the old one...telling Mrs H I need picking up from cricket and chatting to my daughter who always rings when I'm out of the house. Still it looks as though I have advanced into the modern world!

First - congratulations BBW. Your life will never be the same again! (it will be better).

I saw this on the Guardian website. The last paragraph is the one of real note.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2012/jul/20/joy-of-six-olympic-football-tournament

    2) Great Britain 2-0 Denmark (final, London 1908)

All of which led us to the 1908 Olympics, and the very first official Olympic football tournament. The 1908 Games were due to be held in Rome, but when Naples was covered in lava from the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, Italy could no longer afford to host the event. London stepped in at the last minute to hold what proved to be a rain-soaked event at the 70,000-capacity White City stadium (which years later would make way for BBC Television Centre).

Eight teams were in the hat to begin with: the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Bohemia, Great Britain (selected by the FA and purely English) and France (who entered two teams). Due to political problems in the Balkans, Hungary and Bohemia were forced to withdraw so the Netherlands and France A sailed through to the semi-finals without playing a match.

That would be the sum total of good news for the French. Their B team was beaten 9-0 in the first round by Denmark, while France A were then trounced 17-1 by the same opposition in the semi-final, a result which still stands as an Olympic record. The French A team were too proud to play for bronze, so Sweden were given their place and lost to the Dutch.

England's Great Britain team didn't rattle in quite as many as Denmark en route to the final, though they did hammer Sweden 12-1 and Holland 4-0. The showdown with the Danes was played in front of an 8,000 crowd and was won by the English 2-0, the goals coming from Frederick Chapman and captain Vivian Woodward. The Official Olympic Report, however, notes the scoreline "rather flattered the winners who did not show real international form. Denmark, on the other hand, displayed the greatest vigour and determination with far more pace and dash than against France".

For an amateur event, the final wasn't short of star quality. The British captain Woodward played over 100 games for both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, while Harold Hardman was twice an FA Cup finalist with Everton and later chairman of Manchester United at the time of Munich. Denmark's star man, meanwhile, was Harald Bohr, who in his day job was a mathematician – and has a theorem named after him. A theorem! He played for Akademisk Boldklub in Copenhagen alongside his brother Niels, a handy goalkeeper and winner of the 1922 Nobel prize for physics. To put shifting world views of sporting stars over the years into some sort of context, imagine John Terry saying: "L(z) is the only function that satisfies f (z+1) = z f (z) with log (f(z)) convex and also with f(1)=1, you @*$!."

Fascinating bit of history, NZ. What a shame Bohemia had to drop out. They might have been a colourful addition...playing in plus fours and passing round the absinthe at half time.

evening all from rainy Cork. The trip has been nothing short of eventful so far! We set off yesterday early morning and got to Fishguard in very good time, the ferry left a teensy bit late, but all in all, it had been a good trip. We got off the boat in Rosslare and began our drive to Cork, but under an hour into the drive....the clutch went. It couldn't have waited til we got somewhere safe..oh no, it decided to go on a sharp bend on a 60mph road. So, we started trying to call the Irish version of the AA which we were assured would be able to help us. Trouble was, the AA had given us the wrong number, so we had to call my brother back in England to ask him to call the AA and get the right number. Meanwhile, we were about to find out about some of that good ol' famous Irish good nature. While Mr H was making calls, a lovely man called Robbie Philpott stopped with his van, going in the other direction. Being a female looking stranded, his first question was of course.."have you got a flat"...when i informed him we had no clutch, he was hugely sympathetic and immediately set to, towing us to a much safer place. He, rather than we, knew exactly where to find our towing bracket, and the hole to put it in...thank goodness for Robbie Philpott! So, eventually the man with the tow truck arrived, and informed us that he was the only person on, and since Cork was still just under 100 miles away, he couldn't tow us all the way, but the girl in the office would find us a hotel for the night, which she did, and crikey, it was gorgeous, i kinda wished we could have stayed there for the week! Meanwhile, this morning, the same girl set to, finding a garage in Cork that could repair our car, while getting the car the rest of the way to Cork, and me and Little Miss H, while Mr H went on the bus. Finally we all arrived in Cork, 17 hours late, but all in one piece. The tow truck man managed to get me organised with a hire car while we were on the journey to Cork, and i managed to get my son to email me a copy of my driving license, which of course i'd left at home! So, here we are, in Cork (finally), complete with hire car...and a garage fixing our car with a new clutch (which, btw, is going to cost a fortune! lol). This is one hell of an expensive away game...i just hope we win!!

PS: we all kissed the Blarney stone today, so theoretically i'm now blessed with eloquence...you'll have to judge that for yourselves!

The joys of away games, H! You will always remember this trip.

Much the same happened to me when I was a young lad and my grandfather took me to Bristol to see our first ever Div 2 game. We had to leave the car in Chippenham and my grandfather had to go and collect it on the following Monday. As you say, these things get expensive. (We lost 2-0 as well, and looked 2nd best the whole game, nay, season.)

    Enjoy Cork.

Morning all, hot already and I think that this afternoon will be find a bit of shade and don't do much weather.;)

What a tale of woe H. It could have been worse if the ferry had it's clutch go, you could still be bobbing around in the Itish Sea. <yikes>

Thanks for the coffee ak, I will be back later for a cold <ale> I suspect.

    Thanks Ak.

H at least you are in the right place now, if a little lighter of purse. Certainly an adventure and if you had it as a plot for a book it would be laughed at as too improbable. Not so impressed with the idea of a woman being allowed to kiss the Blarney Stone; all those I know don't need that sort of magical aid to help them talk - getting them to stop would be feat.

I didn't realise that there was a test case in front of the court about policing costs at football matches.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-18965193

We have already seen games moved because of police statements about safety. It does seem that the final paragraph is almost a threat to prevent games going ahead.

Will be interesting to see if he does indeed get a run out tonight against Cork. Looking forward to hearing more about the more attacking football that was supposedly apparent in the last two games. :)

Then obviously the game against Spurs where I hope to see a good run out for most of what Zola thinks his first team shall be, can't wait to be back at the Vic for that game :)

One of the good things about Zola should be that smaller players will get their chances. Other managers might think of them as too small or weak to manage, but obviously Zola is tiny and knows that smaller players can achieve great things.
