Kelly, Senderos and Grygera are still on the player profiles page on the clubs website whereas the likes of Pogrebnyak, Johnson and Sá have been removed so maybe that means something. http://www.fulhamfc.com/MatchAndTeam/PlayerProfiles/1stTeamPlayers.aspx
I never said I'd rather have Hughes in the team (although based on his performances toward the end of the season, he deserves another crack), but Senderos has been responsible for a fair few goals conceded. The last one I vaguely remember was the Wigan game, and he only saved face because he scored the winner. I gave Senderos my backing for most of the season but he ended up just making too many costly errors. But like I said earlier, I hope he can improve the fundamental parts of his game as his distribution etc is a big plus. Also, Hughes' failings early last season were because he was playing at right back and was out of his depth there, which I think was a mitigating circumstance.
Bidley, the right back thing is a fair point, but he played centre back away at Newcastle (for example) and gave away two goals. If Senderos had done the same, he'd have been crucified. Roscafre, my point is that people start from a negative point of view with Senderos, which may be because of the awful spell he had towards the end of his first-choice time at Arsenal. When you tell me that everyone cringes when he goes to make a tackle that, arguably, supports my point rather than disproving it. When people talk about actual mistakes, that's a different matter, but I suspect that over the season he hasn't made any more than Hughes. A lot of the criticism is due to perception and we gloss over similar incidents from Hughes because (quite rightly) we love him for his part in the Hodgson glory days.
He has and he has though! You're right on the money with the general perception of Senderos though. Names like Ponderos and Senderdross have been used when I've been talking to any of my (millions of) Arsenal mates. I'm looking forward to seeing if/when Dan Burn breaks through.
On the pre-season tour Reither was wearing no.2 which was Kelly's number last year. Looks like he is gone.
Captain, Ref :to me starting from a negative point of view, when commenting on Senderos. My opinion is based on watching him play in all Fulhams home games since his arrival, thus my negative personal appraisal.
http://www.fulhamfc.com/Club/News/NewsArticles/2012/July/KellysContractExtension.aspx Yeah Kelly signs extension. It was about time the club let us know what was happening. A good deal for club and player I think.
So the only missing person is Senderos The injured player in the 'dodgy picture' (at Motspur Park on the second day back at training) was in fact Josh Passley. Phillipe is still awol. PS apologies conzo and Ireland my posting the Kelly thread crossed with yours here (got overly excited, though not sure why).
It looks as though Grygera will be leaving after all. really bad luck - for him and us. http://www.calcioblog.it/post/34297/calciomercato-esclusiva-calcioblog-oba-oba-martins-e-grygera-rientrano-in-italia?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+calcioblog%2Fit+%28Calcioblog%29
It was a joke, roscafre! My point was more that AJ was the butt of constant criticism over the last couple of years (some of it fair, some - arguably - not) and you were the most consistent and vocal critic. I wasn't haven't a dig at you personally, just using you as a figurehead for that criticism. I'm sorry if you took offense at that - that wasn't my aim. What I guess I was getting at is this. It would be nice to have a season where there isn't one member of the squad being persistently criticised as a matter of routine. For the last few years, it's been AJ, now that he's gone it was inevitable that someone else would be thrust into the spotlight, and my money is on Senderos to become the player who gets criticised no matter what he does, good or bad, and no matter what mistakes his positional rivals make. You are, of course, absolutely entitled to your opinion on him and any other player. I'm not saying that he's a world-beater, I just think that the Hughes=good, Senderos=bad argument doesn't stand up to close examination of those two players' actual performances, rather than fans' perceptions and expectations. But I've argued that one enough times. If anyone is interested in the argument, I'm sure they can track down one of the many threads where it got aired. It would just be nice not to regurgitate is again and again all through the next season.
Make the post your signature! I agree with your point, I don't think it's just an issue amongst Fulham fans though. I think Senderos faced a tough task because he was brought in when Hughes and Hangelaand were a solid and established pairing- probably the strongest aspect of our team a while back. I think he is quite similar to Hangelaand in that he often steps up- with H block on the pitch Aaron usually sweeps- when it's Brede and Phil there isn't the same synergy, but that will come with time. One of the reasons I wouldn't like for Senderos to become our 2012/13 scapegoat is that he gives it everything- he might have a bad game, but it's not for want of trying. He has a good physical presence and far better distribution than Hughes. He's not as intelligent a defender though.
I don't think Senderos should be shielded from criticism just because we don't want a scapegoat. If he gives goals away it should be mentioned!
I agree in principle- so long as we are fair in our focus. In one game Senderos might give a goal away, but then four midfielders/attackers might miss good opportunities, the keeper might push it out for a corner when he could have saved it. If you want to criticise a footballer it doesn't usually take long for them to give you cause- even at the level of Ronaldo & Messi. So long as we aren't just focusing in on one player for mistakes then it is our right to question performance and dedication.
Absolutely it should be mentioned in those circumstances, yet most of the criticism of him is of the 'I shudder when I see him going in for a challenge' variety, regardless of whether he then makes a good tackle or not. My point is he should be judged by his performances, not by our prejudices and it sometimes seems that his mistakes get seized on more readily than those of others.
I mean for repeat offences. Other than that, I agree. The key is balance, that goes for both ros and his over-criticism and people like Captain for over-protection.
I believe silkship has got it spot on in these two statements. Firstly, Senderos and Hangeland are too similar in style to make the perfect CB partnership. Secondly, no one can or should complain about Senderos's commitment - you just have to be at the cottage to see him urging the fans to shout for the team and he is always first to applaud the fans at the end of the game (some, who will be nameless don't even bother). So no, he shouldn't be a scapegoat. But neither should he be immune to cricism; one game at a time, as they say. Where the hell is he anyway ??
