Just to start this debate again, quote from Suso followed by Rodgers and Gaurdiola. http://www.lfctour.com/news/suso-tiki-taka-suits-me Liverpool starlet Suso is eyeing a place in Brendan Rodgers' starting XI for next year's Barclays Premier League campaign and the Spaniard has set his sights on helping bring 'Tiki-Taka' football to Anfield. Rodgers' Swansea side delighted audiences with their intricate passing patterns and a brand of aggressive possession football last season and the Ulsterman has made it clear he intends to implement the same philosophy at Liverpool. And Suso, who joined his teammates in North America on Wednesday, revealed he too was a keen admirer of the new manager's style. "I have had my first training session with the new manager," Suso told Liverpoolfc.com. "He has been talking to me all of the time and, being honest with you, he looks really good. The football he wants us to play is the style of play I like. "It's really good for me so we hope we will get better. The manager has been talking to me about the style of football he wants us to play and to use the ball as much as we can. He told me I need to work hard for the team and do my best. "He did well with that style when he was at Swansea. This is a new look team and we will try to do the best we possibly can. "I'm trying to work as hard as I can every day so I can be in the first team. I would love to be able to get some games in the Barclays Premier League but I know to do that I need to work hard every day and show the boss what I can do. "I hope to get some minutes with the first team in the friendly matches out here. As I say I just want to improve in every game and every training session because we are going to face some really good teams. I just need to learn in every game." Suso shone at this year's UEFA European U19 Championship in Estonia, where his Spanish side were crowned champions after a 1-0 win over Greece. And the youngster believes the tournament provided him with crucial experience, admitting that he feels he can now return to Liverpool an improved player. "It was a really good feeling," he said. "I knew we had a strong team and there were some really good teams in the tournament. I thought we did really well and to win the tournament was special. "The feeling is really good and I am happy because you don't win the European Championships every day. It was really difficult to win it because we had some tough games but finally we did it. "I've been improving a lot since I left Liverpool at the end of last season. Playing for Spain at the Euros I was playing against some of the best players in Europe so I would say yes I think I do come back a better player. "To make a competitive appearance for Liverpool would be a really good experience for me. I didn't get the chance last season and I was a little bit sad, but this year we have a new coach and it's a new season, so I hope I can get that chance." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- âI like to control games. I like to be responsible for our own destiny. If you are better than your opponent with the ball you have a 79 per cent chance of winning the gameâ¦for me it is quite logical. It doesnât matter how big or small you are, if you donât have the ball you canât score.â âMy template for everything is organisation. With the ball you have to know the movement patterns, the rotation, the fluidity and positioning of the team. Then thereâs our defensive organisationâ¦so if it is not going well we have a default mechanism which makes us hard to beat and we can pass our way into the game again. Rest with the ball. Then weâll build again.â âThe strength of us is the team. Leo Messi has made it very difficult for players who think they are good players. Heâs a real team player. He is ultimately the best player in the world and may go on to become the best ever. But heâs also a team playerâ¦If you have someone like Messi doing it then Iâm sure my friend Nathan Dyer can do it. It is an easy sell.â âWhen we have the football everybodyâs a player. The difference with us is that when we have the ball we play with 11 men, other teams play with 10 and a goalkeeper.â (All from Brendan Rodgers) âYou win the ball back when there are thirty metres to their goal not eightyâ (Guardiola 2009)
Anyone else getting fed up with hearing the words 'tika-taka' yet...? Also getting fed up of us playing like Swansea or Barcelona too! We are Liverpool Football Club and we play the Liverpool way - pass and move football with a structure tactical unit that is hard to break break whilst pressing the opposition high up the pitch. I can tolerate the link to Swansea since that is Rodgers' former club so it is a natural comparison. Same as Rodgers will be compared to Kenny and possibly Hodgson and Rafa too because they are the former managers. But why compare him to Gaurdiola? Rant over... Not aimed directly at you Luv
I know no offence taken. I'm of a different viewpoint, yes we are Liverpool but I think we will play the (dare I say it) the Tika Taka football and that this is something that we need to get used to. Rodgers is not going to change the way he wants his team to play. I don't think this changes our identity new managers always make slight changes and with this being attack minded football I don't think there will be a problem. So I'm exited about the new football but understand it is a worry for some.
I'm not saying Rodgers will or won't change the way we play, just that it is going to be the Liverpool way of playing. Rodgers has already said that he intends to play in the Liverpool way of old. He said he wants us to keep possession, play pass and move football, he wants us to be tactically solid and wants us to aim at getting the ball back within seven seconds (I think it was seven?). IMO, this is the Liverpool way of old. He may tweak it here and there, we may see more passing and possession play than we are used too, but ultimately, we are hopefully going to see a side that belongs at Anfield, a true Liverpool team. He is just re-introducing it at Anfield after slightly different versions under Rafa and Kenny. Hodgson and Houllier both set up to defend and counter so it is very different from their eras Edit: plus, I don't think these constant comparisons to Barcelona are going to do anyone any good
I'm not worried about playing that style of football, I just don't want the club to be seen as one of many Barcelona type apprentice clubs! The similarities between the two clubs are familiar enough without continuously we want to copy them!
I don't see Barca as having the monopoly on this style of play they will have taken parts of the whole system from other styes anyway. It's the same as any other style of football if a manager prefers this it's what he brings to the club. It certainly has similarities to pass and move but is also very different. I think that fans that are expecting Rodgers to change are in for a shock, we are going to be patient and pass, pass and pass again. I don't like the comparisons to other clubs, you don't get Stoke compared to West Ham because they play a long ball tactic so why us to Barca? We are still Liverpool but I think there will be a noticable change in our playing style.
Agreed and so will everyone. The style is probably more suited to the older members who used to watch us keepin possesion and even going back to the keeper, it's going to be more of a change for younger fans. The potential problem is if we don't get off to a good start, we will all then have to be patient and back Rodgers and the team, if we end up split with some calling for Rodgers to go then it will just give the owners an excuse to bring in another manager and we then start again. We have to all be on board for this ride, and that is also something that we have lost in recent years.
I totally agree with you on this point and it is ESSENTIAL that we develop a system of play that is unique to Liverpool (that takes into account the player skill-sets, and the traditions of the club). Tiki-Taka is a long way from being the purest form of football (perhaps the closest was Total Football) and is in and of itself merely a system. To that degree it is no different to 442 or 433 or whatever other system you can envisage. We need a Liverpool style of play that takes the best of what we already have and weds it to the best that Tiki-Taka can offer to produce an effective system/style that is even more dominating than before. That is Rodger's challenge, crack it and he will become a legend, stick with what he's done before and he will fail. It's as simple as that. As for Suso then he should take some lessons in PR. His comments can be interpreted as saying that he improved when he played for Spain because what he was doing at Liverpool was no good. Don't bite the hand that feeds you Son until you've actually done something to deserve the privilege!
By developing/implementing a system i.e. Tika Taka - we can then bring in the personnel who fit with it. No point buying players for the sake of it if they can't fit in. For the short term, Rodgers will have to ensure the system he chooses is what he wants to be using for the long term but will have to tweak it so that it adapts to existing players. As time goes on, Rodgers will bring in players who fit the system and not the other way around.
To be honest I posted this get get a debate going as it is a bit quiet. We won't really see the effect of the new managers style until we are well into the season. Should be a fun ride whatever happens.
How about turning that idea on its head and dveloping/bringing in players of high quality that are capable of adapting to any number of styles of play?
Think he is saying that he was playing against the best players in the world (at that age group) in the tournament which improved his game - see nothing but praise and ambition in the article myself.
When Rafa came in, he played a 442/4411 system because he didn't have the players to implement the 4231 system he is regularly uses. It wasn't until his third season in charge that we saw the 4231 came to fruition at Anfield. Rodgers definitely needs to be given time but he can't afford to be languishing in the bottom half of the table either
