If the trophy is the FA Cup of Europa League, I'd pick that. I wouldn't sacrifice a high PL finish for the League Cup.

The League Cup would be canny, just so long as we still had an okay finish, say, Top8.

Here's a counter-question. Newcastle win the Europa League AND the FA Cup next season but end up relegated. Yes/no?

Afraid not, but you should have started a new thread about that, it detracts from the original post.

    Sorry. :(

To answer OP, yes. Winning a cup grants a European place anyway which is the main reward we are seeking from a high league finish.

Depends. I'd rather finish 6th and get Europa than finish 17th but win the LC and get Europa.

If we qualify for the Europa, or even the CL, it will be a successful season, like one of a number that we've enjoyed this millenium.

If we won a cup, it would be the first since before Shearer was born.

    No comparison I think.

If we have a good Europa League run, finish outside the Europa League spots, but win a cup and qualify that way, that would be great.

    So cup for me.

A cup would be brilliant. But it all depends on how 'low' we finish by taking the cup option. I'd hate a poor league season (finishing below 'them') but with a good cup run, even if we won it. And if it meant bottom three, then no wayyyyy. Silverware, or a great league finish? I think it's a high league finish for me.

I said league. Obviously I have no idea how it feels to win a cup, but winning a league game at the weekend gives a feelgood factor that lasts the whole week. A higher league finish makes that feeling come along a lot more often. Going to watch us lose every week would not be my idea of a successful season.

I guess it depends on the idea of a poor season though. A top half finish and a cup would be success for us. Reasonable league performance and a cup win. Bottom half and a cup wouldn't be great, but at least we'd have a cup. Relegation and a cup would be disaster. Ideally though, top 6 and a cup would be perfection <laugh>

Depends on the league finish for me. I'd take 3rd (guaranteed champs league) over winning even a cup double.

As incredible as winning a cup would be, a champions league place would almost certainly take us the the so called "next level" and quite possibly ensure champions league football for the next 5-10 years.

I'm not saying 3rd is necessarily a realistic target, and the fact i'd take that over a cup double sadly shows the state of modern day football, as in reality there is no way a 3rd place finish should transform a clubs fortunes more than a cup double.

Goes back to the argument that only the champions should enter the champions league I guess. However, as they don't, and to answer the OP if the league finish was a champions league placing then i'd take that over winning a cup.
