Legwinski was on his last legs although I'll grant you that in his prime he was a top midfielder. Walters more of a forward / winger than a midfielder. By on our books I was talking about permanent players rather than loanees, otherwise Gio would win hands down. Still waiting for someone to name a better midfielder.
personally, i think your club treated owen garvan poorly. i know he's a bit lightweight but the boy can pass a football better than most and can dictate a game. you could have built your midfield around him these past few years.
things is, you can pass the football the best in the world, but when you can't be bothered to run 5yds it means jack ****!
Have to agree Supers. The problem with Garvan was he didnt run round like a ****ing idiot which was all Keane cared about. Guru, IMO I think thats a bit harsh. Garvan, along with Trotter (another potentially decent midfielder sold by that irish tosser) wasnt truly lazy but had a style that made it seem like they were very relaxed. I would also suggest that you dont have to run around everywhere if you know what you are doing. Norris for example ran everywhere and done **** all.
depends where you play him. i never saw jan molby run anywhere but he was class. ian crook (your favourite ) never used to run anywhere but he controlled the match. currently we have david fox who does a similar role. if you want a box to box player or a tough tackler then no, he's not what you want, but if you want someone to stick his foot on the ball, control the game and bring others into play, then he would have been an important player for you for a very long time.
Garvan had all the skill, but his attitude stank! he thought his **** smelt sweeter than everybody else. Trotter i agree should have stayed, but he was a victim of some of our blind supporters. Keane used to get hassle when he selected trotter, yet now some fans give him hassle for selling him! who would be a football manager!
Garvan was a talent, but he was demotivated by Keane and who can blame him. His performances weren't up to it and he hasn't kicked on particularly at Palace or for the Rep of Ireland and proven the doubters wrong either.
Let's just widen this discussion out and ask the question: What players made up Town's best ever midfield? John Wark has to be the first name on everyones list!
A few players to consider from each decade, i have missed loads out as I can't remember them all off the top of my head! 1970s Roger Osborne, John Wark, Colin Viljoen, Arnold Muhren, Frans Thijssen, Brian Talbot 1980s Romeo Zondervan, John Deehan, Jason Dozzel (that's it the rest were pony!) 1990s Paul Mason, Gavin Johnson, Matt Holland, Kieron Dyer 2000s Jim Magilton, Tommy Miller, Chris Bart-Williams, Sylvan Legwinski
I included loans just to highlight how many we have had. Also, Gio isn't a central midfielder and didn't play there for us therefore he's not on the list. I still maintain Hyam is far from the best, probably top 10 but to say he's the best we've had in the past 6 years I do not agree with. I agree I wish we'd had the REAL Legwinski, though I still thought he had a touch of class and composure about him. Garvan = such a waste. A fantastic left peg, yet other gaping holes in his game. Should have turned out a lot better, I had high hopes for him!
Season long loan or one year contract whats the difference if he can improve us i'm not gonna start moaning we don't have to pay anything plus Spurs are probably paying the lions share of his wages......................Everyones a winner..BABY............ thats the truth.
In an ideal world Hamps I would have signed someone permanent, someone with a bit of experience, someone like Xabi Alonso!! But seriously I don't know if I would have brought him in, because I don't know what he is like, clearly Tottenham rate him as they have made him sign a new deal before coming here because maybe they think his performances would drum up some interest in him and also Klug and Jewell clearly rate him and IMO it is a position we need to strengthen probably as much as CB and striker. Or should we have just waited got a striker and CB in then gone for a player who they clearly rate and may have lost out on!! I'm gonna predict that all those that are moaning about this transfer now will be the ones actually saying this guy is the best thing since sliced bread in a few months!!
I have to trust Klug's judgement but at the same time I do worry that this is a distraction in getting the players in the positions that can really make the difference!
