Ferguson believes Michael Carrick, 31, will play a key role as United look to bounce back from a first campaign without a trophy since 2004-05.

He added: "Carrick is the key to it. If you look at the central midfielders in the Premier League, he can match up against any of them in terms of quality.

"He can read the game and also play in front of the back four."

Must have had a good few bottles of red and a drop of scotch before he came out with that. Brilliant, ha, ha<ok>

I agree with you, Rogers will fail in the quest for Liverpool glory.

Yep, he also said we paid 'over the odds' for Hazard, saying he was over priced despite also making a similar bid for him <doh>.

It wasn't just transfer fee's he was talking about, it was the costs that are now involved in big money deals and he used Hazard (and Nasri) as an example, and I have to say I agree with him, I mean paying an agent £6million for sorting out a transfer is kind of ridiculous.

I heard he offered more in wages and a similar fee, so basically he's talking a load of ****e and sounds extremely bitter/stupid.

I actually heard the opposite, I heard Chelsea offered more than both United and City in wages, United reportedly offered £130k a week, City £150k a week and Chelsea apparently agreed on £170k a week, quite a few places reported that, I think I read it in the Telegraph among others.

Really? The same telegraph also said that Hazard was close to signing for United (who provided the best financial conditions) but after Abramovic's intervention decided to opt for Chelsea's project. At the end of the day, my point is that papers talk bollocks, my main point is that United also had a similar bid accepted and Fergie is running his mouth stupidly contradicting his hypocritical self.

Are you really naive enough to believe that Abramovic's "intervention" didn't involve more cash? Also, the Telegraph actually reported before the England v Belgium friendly that Chelsea were favorites to sign him due to his wage demands.

Are you really naive enough to take the papers word as gospel?

No, but how wrong were they in this case? They suggested a long time ago that Chelsea were favorites to sign him, and they did, even after Hazard himself claimed he was heading to Manchester.

haha fail? that ain't a joke to be a fail, thats the truth, even if you get a worlc class manager in, there's no way liverpool going to go in the top four, forget the top four, Liverpool ain't even going to each 5th spot, 6th spot is atleast the best for you

Pretty much accurate. He was on the verge of signing for Utd, before his agent called Abramovich to say if he was willing to meet Hazard's demand for £4.6 million a year net then he'd be a Chelsea player. Which obviously implies Utd hadn't met his demands and were offering less money.

Not saying it's a crime to offer higher wages to a player - he's probably more valuable to Chelsea than us anyway due to the players we already have in his position - but you can see why SAF thinks you paid over the odds. We negotiated to reach what we felt was a fair fee and wage, then you guys offered more. QED <ok>
