Durham is WEARSIDE, as in RIVER WEAR, OUR river. Far as I'm concerned, Durham is the closest thing to Mackem.
As a proud born and bred County Durham lad Mon's I agree wholeheartedly and as a lad who has lived all his life in a wearside town (the mighty Wear runs right through the heart of my Chester le Street) I cant for the life of me understand anyone being a dirty craa from here. However, thats an individuals choice and as I have said, I'd welcome a Wallsend born and bred lad who was a die hard Sunderland fan, just as I'd shun a Hendon born lad who was a mag (2 unlikely scenarios I grant you but it makes my point).
Certainly does Cest, comes back to the old problem that people can't separate 'Geordie' from 'Mag' Gateshead folk are Geordies, they are also close to 60/40 split between NUFC & SAFC (Mags favour, of course). Then you have Peterlee, Easington etc, traditionally SAFC, but always been a Mag presence, which has grown (probs 60/40 OUR favour). How do we define these people then!
