Sky Sports breaking that Rangers have accepted a bid from us. Any idea if we have come to an agreement with them and paid a fee, or is it just the clarification of his clearance to play for us?
Rangers' fans take on it: http://forum.rangersmedia.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=232322 Couple of quotes: "Well done Green and Southampton for agreeing a fee, but Davis is still a traitor for jumping ship to see us get nothing. " "Ps who the **** are Southampton...??..A team with the global reach of the English Channel" "I'm happy about this, Southampton seem like a proper club to me, they do a lot of business the right way concerning transfers." "I think its credit to Southanpton here for morally doing the right thing, even tho 800k is still theft for Davis." "As for the Davis deciding to go to a '****e' club (personally have a hell of a lot of time for Southampton) purely to get rangers a 'wedge' - that's utterly unsubstantiated fantasy." "Oh dear Steven, if you had done this the right way you would have found that the club wasn't very hard to deal with. Even though your new club have finally found common sense, you will always remain a traitor, who shafted the club that rescued you from Fulham reserves."
The posts are also interjected with strange automatic anti-Murray/Whyte messages which is a bit weird. They are bloody miserable about everything but I guess you can understand that. Not sure why they expected their best players to stay though.
The thing I liked was the comments from Green. "Green told Rangers' official website: "I am delighted that we have agreed terms over the transfer of Steven Davis. "Southampton have acted in good faith during the process. We wish them every success and they have signed a player who will undoubtedly make a great contribution to their club - just as he did at Ibrox."" For me yet another example of an astute chairman allowing our class to shine through.
That seems to be the norm now if recent activities are anything to go by which can only be good news.
By throwing £800k down the drain for a player he could have got for free? Great business! Of course Rangers are going to be happy, theys suckered Saints into paying a fee when there was no need.
You are always going to get some disgruntled fans in a situation like this and let's face it who can blame them? I've just read that the SPL, even after kicking them out of the league still want more sanctions imposed on Rangers AND a cut of their TV rights before they agree to them joining the SFL. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18929983 It seems they want to give them a good kicking on top of everything else. Most of the Rangers fans are pretty complimentary about our club considering we've mugged them over Davis. Even if The Don has made them an irrefusible offer it was still a steal. This made me laugh though; "Ps who the **** are Southampton...??..A team with the global reach of the English Channel" He must be hurting real bad, but I can't fault his geography.
It clears up the situation without going through the appeal system where we may have ended up paying more than £800k. And in case you didn't know £800k doesn't even scratch the surface of the funds we have available. It's an honourable and classy move by Saints and as a QPR fan I can see why that's lost on you.
Oh, I so love the fact that there are football fans out there who still think Saints are the same small to medium sized club they have been since they first joined the First Division in 1966. And in this particular fan's case, so eloquently was the ignorance illustrated. I know Saints have reached territory where progress will become slower, but the next 5 years are going to be so much fun, if only to see the disbelieving faces and reactions of fans from opposition teams, and indeed from our own club too.
