Does anyone think that the signings we have made are quality ones are they going to get us promoted. Your thoughts on this would be good .
On the balance of things they look to be players with the necessary quality and experience to give a reasonable chance of top 7 - or better depending on if we can sign Reeve, cover for centre back and someone with real pace ( don't mean the fit bird in brb's link )
I have come to a simple conclusion on the new signings and that is people are slightly subdued about them apart from the endless stream of tweets congratulating Charlie Allen. Normally one signing would be met with an immediate flurry of comments, look around all the sites and there appears to be a lack of acknowledgement.
Glad with the Nelson signing, League 1 experiance so should be fine at this level. With Forecast on loan for season, I'd be slightly worried for my future if I was Flitney. Strevens is a very useful addition to the squad. Not a great goalscorer, but has experiance of promotion from this league. Charlie Allen. No me neither!! But did play a handful of games for Notts County last season so maybe MadDog knows what he can bring to the team. Now for a flying winger, a fourth striker (Reeves?) and a couple of defenders and I think we should be ok. UTG
I can't say that I am blown away by the signings so far. Forecast, despite what many others have said, is still an unknown quantity, and I for one am certainly not going to condem him just yet. Strevens on the other hand is very much a known content. He is pretty much a lower league striker who will get you 10+ goals in a season, he will hold the ball up and you will know he'll give his all fo the cause. I guess the squad is better for the signings but I don't think these players are going to give that extra touch of class we need to clinch an auto spot, but at least on paper I think we may already have that in Whelpdale if we can get the best out of him...
Didn't know we signed to Magpies too... Nelson is a good signing, I feel the experience he will bring will be priceless and hopefully he can help stablise the back four. Does make you wonder about Flitney's future. Allen is again an unknown. He had played under MadDog before so he must see something in him... Still not blown away but quietly statisfied
I leave the internet for a few hours and we go signing happy Im glad about the signing of Stuart Nelson a good goalkeeper for this level, although it brings into question the signing of Forecast in the first place. Either way it looks like its ended the Gills careers of Flitney and Hawkes. MadPup seems bit of an unknown quality as he only played 11 times (in all comps) for Notts County, but with the departures of Spiller & Weston could give us some extra cover/competition. Strevens does exactly what he says on the tin basically. Perfect competition for Keds which could help him push on this season.
I reckon Forecast has been thrown in for free, with Southampton paying his wages, otherwise why else would we have wanted him, knowing that we are to sign Stuart Nelson. I don't see, even on a free why we need to be carrying another keeper though?
I thought Allen wanted to sign quality rather than quantity. So far only Nelson looks like 1st team unless we have major injuries. I do think we have done brillant if we got over 1 million for Gazza though, and maybe over 5OOK for Payne. This squad does not look strong enough for promotion unless we bring in 3 quality players.
good point brb - which I was about to make ( no I'm not doing a Hoadie on you ) - was too lazy. ....... you may think that we've got a lot of keepers - but only a few seasons ago ( 2006/7 ) we had awful injury problems to the keepers - ended up using 6 different ones.
but that may have had something to do with the fact that Jepson didn't realise you need to have more than one goalkeeper signed to the club
They are not the greatest signings but I believe there will be better to come, I think Strevens, Allen and Forecast will be back ups but Nelson will be number 1. I am so happy we have another keeper as we needed one even though that takes us to 4, with Hawkes out on loan I see Flitney will be back up and Forecast will be third choice so I doubt he will see much football next season. I think money will be spent on centre backs and a winger. So overall I am optimistic and think these players are good additions as the team as a whole is good but just needed a bit more strength and experience and Strevens and Nelson have that.
The centre half position needs to be filled and I wonder if thats going to be someone we have to pay for, rather than a free and thats why theres been no rumour about anyone.
