This has crossed my mind before, that when a manager signs a player for big money, espescialy in the close season, does he feel the pressure to play him (obviously im talking Prossy) is so bad that he might just ignore another(maybe OJ) despite what he sees in training or friendlies ? The manager needs to prove he's a good judge, when it comes to signing players. It can't be easy to see a lad clearly outclassing your'e new â¬3.3m signing and so picking the freebie first. My reason for posing this question is of course, the fact Simpson has been there before with the £1.3m signing of Mclean. Would you be man enough to play the form player and risk the inevitable slating from fans and press ?
You pay £2.6m for a player that you believe is going to improve your team, so you play him. You don't buy him just to have a look at him, you do your research and see if he is good enough to start in your team. If he doesn't hit the ground running, you don't leave him out straight away, you give him a chance because you are confident that he is the right person for the team.
Scoring goals against Ferriby and Winterton can't really be counted as form. Can you genuinely see Homer keeping Proschwitz or Fryatt out of the team?
Maybe i didn't explain myself well enough ? There are so many variables, but let's just imagine that SB didn't really know OJ. He watches him,he's impressed. He might just see something he likes. It will of course, piss the fans off if he starts the likes of Homer and leaves Prossy on the bench ? But surely he would be doing the right thing anyway ?
I've said this loads of times already but the point with Simpson isn't just the goals, it's the fact that in all 3 games he's been our best striker by a long way. McLean and Fryatt were also playing against Ferriby and Winterton yet they looked poor. Also this. He's already done it twice in pre-season.
