Warnock delight at his 'flawless' defenders

NEIL WARNOCK heaped huge praise on his defenders for the part they played in Tuesday night's 1-0 win at Barnsley - a result that leaves Rangers tantalisingly close to automatic promotion.

He was looking for a positive reaction after saturday's 4-1 defeat at Scunthorpe and said his players delivered.

"I thought we defended magnificently," the QPR boss told the club's official website.

"That started from the front with Heidar [Helguson], who has blood everywhere but was first class.

"The back four didn't put a foot wrong - Matt Connolly and Kaspars Gorkss were instrumental. The two full backs defended as well as they have done all season. They were all magnificent.

"To bounce back after a defeat is what makes this a great victory for us. When you've got a team like ours, you've got to bounce back at the first opportunity and we did that in style."

Rangers were again indebted at the other end of the pitch to Adel Taarabt, whose first minute goal settled the outcome.

"Adel took his goal superbly well. He's the only player on the park who could have scored it," Warnock said.

    Taking it on the Chim
    By davidmcintyre

So, Pascal Chimbonda’s used Twitter to spill the beans – he’s quickly become surplus to requirements at QPR.

In fact, he fell out of favour even quicker than his tweet on Tuesday suggested.

As early as the end of February – only weeks after his move from Blackburn – I was told Chimbonda had managed to get on the wrong side of Neil Warnock, and was already close to being finished at Rangers.

The final straw may have been the player’s performance as a second-half substitute against Sc**thorpe, but the dye was cast before then.

This was a frustrating one for me. Because I don’t know Chimbonda, in order to stand the story up back in early March I first needed to speak to Warnock, but for various reasons wasn’t able to at the time.

When I did get to speak to him, it was face-to-face at the training ground, when a couple of other reporters were also present.

I broached the issue, but Warnock was having none of it. He’s an experienced manager who knows how to deal with these things and likes to keep them in-house.

The man is no fun. I’ve told him I rely on getting stories like this out there, but he doesn’t seem to care. Warnock’s priority always seems to be the club and his players. People like that have no place in football, in my view.

Anyway, his responses to me were then used for an article by Yann Tear in the Gazette, in which Warnock insisted there was no problem with Chimbonda, which made it difficult for me to develop the story.

But it was obvious Chimbonda would not be retained at the end of the season, when his short-term contract is due to expire.

And a short-term signing is all he was ever likely to be.

Even if he had endeared himself to Warnock and made a bigger contribution in the final months of the season, at the end of it I fully expected him to get no more than polite thanks and best wishes for the future.

Other managers have had problems with Chimbonda, which meant offering a longer-term deal would have been risky.

But his ability cannot be questioned, and as defensive cover for the all-important run-in, it was probably worth taking him.

Credit is due to Bradley Orr. Warnock considered starting with Chimbonda soon after his arrival but the decision not to proved to be the right one, because Orr has really stepped up to the plate in recent weeks.

Had the decision gone against him, I suspect Orr’s reaction to being left out would have been better than Chimbonda’s has been.

Orr has shown a great attitude this season, which is partly why he’s preparing to celebrate promotion while Chimbonda’s looking for a new club.

Returning Ramage targets new QPR deal

    Ben Kosky
    Wednesday, April 13, 2011
    10:42 AM

PETER Ramage is determined to earn a new contract at QPR after making his comeback from a seven-month injury nightmare this week.

The Rangers defender, who suffered a torn cruciate ligament in September, finally returned to action with a half-hour run-out in Tuesday’s training ground friendly, a 1-0 defeat against MK Dons.

Now the former Newcastle player is desperate for further opportunities to prove his worth before the end of the season, when his Loftus Road contract is due to expire.

“I haven’t yet sat down with anyone at the club to discuss the situation, but I’d love to stay,” Ramage told the Times. “It’s been a rocky three years but I’ve loved every minute of it and my family’s really settled down here.

“Getting the injury in the last year of my contract was sod’s law, but now at least I can throw my hat in the ring and let the manager know I’m available, then obviously it’s up to him whether I’m involved or not.

“Of course there are more important considerations for the club – it’s all about the lads getting the points they need to be promoted. I’ll be shouting it from the rooftops, though – it’s important for me to be fit for selection.

“I’ve been trying to stay involved, going to the first-team games and doing as much as I can off the pitch as well. Now all I can do is try to impress and do everything I can to make sure I’m still at QPR next season.”

The 27-year-old Geordie left his hometown club to sign for the Rs on a free transfer in 2008, but his fortunes fluctuated under a succession of managers.

Some excellent displays in central defence at the end of last season seemed to have caught Warnock’s eye, but a red card against his former club meant Ramage was suspended for the start of the current campaign and the game against Middlesbrough, in which he sustained the cruciate ligament injury, was only his second substitute appearance.

Initial reports suggested that the injury would rule him out for the entire season, but the player refused to accept that diagnosis.

“I’ve been feeling strong for the last few weeks and it was great to get out there and play,” added Ramage. “Hopefully I’ve got the monkey off my back now and, touch wood, that’s the end of the problem.

“I was always determined to at least get back to training before the end of the season and, if a game came along, I wanted to make sure I could be involved.

“I think we’re going to try and get another training ground game arranged soon but, if we can’t and it means I’m doing extra training instead, then so be it!”

QPR boss Neil Warnock eyeing Fulham striker Andy Johnson and Hull's Jimmy Bullard

Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock is already planning for his side's top-flight return by plotting moves for Andy Johnson and Jimmy Bullard.
The Loftus Road club could secure promotion to the Barclays Premier League with victory over Derby on Monday night.
And Warnock is already identifying players he feels will give his side top league experience needed season.
Fulham striker Johnson is high on the west London club's hitlist.

The wanted men: Neil Warnock wants to add Andy Johnson (left) and Jimmy Bullard (right) to the ranks at Loftus Road
Johnson has scored two goals in 23 games for Mark Hughes' side this season since returning from a long-term knee injury.
The former Everton striker has a year left on his current deal and Warnock hopes to lure the 30-year-old to Loftus Road.
However, Johnson does not want to take a drop in his £40,000-per-week wages which could prove to be a stumbling block.
Hull midfielder Bullard - who is on loan at Ipswich - is set to leave the KC Stadium at the end of the season.

High and rising: Neil Warnock has guided QPR to the brink of the Barclays Premier League
And Warnock has earmarked the former Fulham man for a place in his midfield next season.
Ipswich are keen on making Bullard's loan deal permanent - but another crack at the top-flight would be hard to resist for the 32-year-old.
Bullard's £45,000-per-week contract still has two years left to run.

I'm not too keen on Bullard as he is injury prone and that only gets worse the older the player plus recovery time needed is longer. I regard this as a poor investment Johnson on the other hand is similar to Helguson so that would work.

If we could get Bullard on a pay-as-you-play deal it might work. He would be a good guy to have in dressing room as he would gee up the players. Johnson is still getting is fitness together however would be a good signing especially with a pre-season training session under his belt. Anywas, this could all just be paper talk

QPR will let Adel Taarabt leave for £10million
Apr 15 2011 By Paul Warburton

IF REAL Madrid really want QPR’s Adel Taarabt – they can have him – but it will cost the European superstars £10million.
Rangers boss Neil Warnock revealed for the first time last night he would be willing to sell his star striker – and reckoned speculation linking the mercurial talent with a move away was set to rage all summer.
He said: "Everyone in football has a price – and if someone was willing to come in with that sort of money – you would have to look at it.
"There might be a club, Real or whoever, willing to take a gamble on him, but if you ask me here and now, I think he’ll be with us at the start of next season."

Warnock revealed it was not only fatigue that saw him sub Taarabt in the 1-0 win at Barnsley on Tuesday night – a day after Real were linked with the Moroccan international – it was also the threat he could get sent off.
Taarabt proved the match-winner with the game’s only goal after just 47 seconds – but was then booked and lucky to stay on after a wild swing of the boot that on another night would have been a straight red.
"He’ll learn," said Warnock, "but he could have been either injured as the tackles came in or sent off if it carried on the way it did in the second half."

Midfielder is hoping Rams can gatecrash QPR party plans at Loftus Road

    By [email protected]

STEPHEN Pearson is hoping Derby County can put Queens Park Rangers' promotion party on hold at Loftus Road on Monday night.

QPR are 10 points clear at the top of the Championship table and, depending on results this weekend, could clinch a place in the Premier League next season with victory over the Rams.

But Derby, fresh from dealing a blow to Leeds United's promotion hopes, will be out to upset the champions-elect in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

And Pearson thinks they are capable of doing just that.

"These are the games you want to play in," said the Scottish midfielder. "QPR will be looking to finish the job off and make sure they get over the line.

"They've had a great season and it will be a tough game but it's one we're looking forward to now, on the back of four points out of six.

"We want to go there and try to spoil the party, so to speak, and we'll go there with confidence.

"If we keep playing at a high tempo, press them and get in their faces, like we did against Leeds, it makes us really difficult to play against."

The Rams have eased their relegation worries with a 2-2 draw against Coventry City and Tuesday night's 2-1 success against Leeds.

Nigel Clough's side are now 11 points clear of the drop zone, with only five games of the campaign remaining.

"We've got a tough run of matches coming up, so it was crucial that we got something from the last two home games," said Pearson.

"Tuesday night was a big win for us and gives us a bit more breathing space.

"But we still want to finish as high up the table as we can and get as many points as we can.

"We're obviously looking to finish the season off as well as we can, personally and collectively.

"And we also want to do it for the supporters, because they have had a difficult season.

"It's been a very up-and-down season for us, so we want to go out on a high.

"The fans were fantastic against Leeds and it was a great atmosphere. It's nights like that when you love playing at Pride Park.

"The fans played their part and the lads gave them something to cheer about."

After Max Gradel had given Leeds a 58th-minute lead, Pearson set up both Derby goals in a stirring fightback.

First, he skipped past former team-mate Paul Connolly before crossing for Jamie Ward to equalise.

"It was nice to get the assist and it was a great finish from Jamie," said Pearson. "The gaffer has been on at us to play it low and hard across the goal.

"It paid dividends and it was a crucial stage of the game."

Moments later, Pearson's corner picked out Ben Davies, whose superb volley from the edge of the penalty area turned out to be the winner.

"Ben is technically very good and he does that in training all the time," added the former Celtic man.

"So it fell to the right man on the edge of the box and it was a great finish."

Davies' goal looked like a well-rehearsed move straight off the training ground, although Pearson admitted this was not entirely the case.

He said: "I actually tried to stand it up to the back post but that's why we have someone on the edge of the box – and I'll take the credit for it!"

Pearson felt Derby were good value overall for their victory against Leeds.

"The first half was a bit scrappy but we played a lot better in the second half," said the 28-year-old.

"I thought we were a bit unlucky to go behind, as the goal came during our best spell up to that point.

"But we showed great courage to come back against a side who are riding high and going for the play-offs.

"It was important that we got back into it quite quickly.

"We didn't deserve to be behind at that stage of the game and we showed great character to come back.

"I thought we were deserved winners in the end. It was a very tense game and they put a lot of balls into our box but I don't think they created too many clear-cut chances and we defended well."

Don't know, but I reckon he should be careful, he doesn't end up back in some teams reserves.

    PADDY POWERS TO CLUB RECORD

    Fri 15 Apr 2011

Paddy Kenny's form this season has been quite exceptional and now the R's number one has his name in the QPR record books following his 23rd clean sheet of the campaign against Barnsley on Tuesday night.

Kenny's 23rd shut-out of the season means he's now eclipsed the previous record of 22 clean sheets, held by Phil Parkes in the 1971/72 season.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk about his achievement, Kenny said: "It's a great record.

"Phil Parkes was a top, top keeper at this Club, so to beat his record is obviously something I am very proud of.

"I think the most clean sheets I've ever kept in one season was 21 during my Sheffield United days, so it's a personal record too.

"The whole team deserve credit though, because when I look back over the course of the season, there have been so many occasions when someone has produced a moment of brilliance to keep our goal intact."

Despite setting a new record, Kenny isn't about to rest on his laurels and is already targeting another clean sheet against Derby County on Monday night.

"There's five games to go and that means potentially another five clean sheets up for grabs," he said.

"That's the target and hopefully we can achieve promotion in the process."

R's gaffer Neil Warnock paid his own glowing tribute to Kenny, adding: "This is probably the record that satisfies me the most.

"It's all well scoring goals at the other end, but unless you keep clean sheets, you're not going to win as many matches as we have this season.

"Paddy deserves a lot of credit, but we defend as a team, from the front, and it's paid dividends so far this season."

Warnock added: "David Rouse (Goalkeeping Coach) and Radek Cerny deserve a mention too.

"Paddy knows how much I rate Raddy and that keeps him on his toes.

"The three of them work so well together."

Warnock wants four more points for QPR promotion

ALL EYES will be on Norwich City tonight as they take on Nottingham Forest - all eyes except Neil Warnock's that is.

If the third-placed Canaries fail to win, QPR will effectively go up with a win against Derby at Loftus Road on Monday night.

Promotion will also be all-but guaranteed with a win if second-placed Cardiff fail to beat Portsmouth in south Wales this weekend - such is their superior goal difference.

But the QPR boss said: "I won't be watching or keeping in touch with the score. I'm not expecting any favours and expect that we will need four more points."

Rangers will be hoping for the chance to clinch promotion in front of their own fans, but a win for Norwich and Cardiff would mean Warnock's men having to wait a little longer, with the prospect of finally crossing the line at Cardiff on Easter Saturday.

Technically, fourth-placed Swansea could still get to 85 points if they win at Burnley on Saturday, but with a goal difference 19 worse than Rangers, only the pedants would claim QPR are not up if they beat the Rams to take them to that total of 85.

The FA charges relating to the acquisition of Ali Faurlin would be more likely to ruin the dream than a Swansea miracle.

Skysports.com understands Leon Clarke has cancelled his loan spell at Preston for personal reasons.

Clarke joined the Championship strugglers on loan from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season during the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old made six appearances for North End, scoring one goal in the draw with Watford.
However, Clarke has not featured since the defeat to Burnley at the end of February and he has now cut short his loan stint to return to Loftus Road.

Clarke will be unable to play for Rangers upon his return under the terms of his loan deal, but he will continue to train with Neil Warnock's Premier League hopefuls.
