The main problem is English strikers are overpriced. Ridiculously overpriced.

A foreign striker proven in the Prem is best. I.e. Demba Ba.

To everyone going on about Henry, Ruud etc. They are a class above, they cant be immitated and one of a kind. And im on about strikers for those banging on about Tiote, although I should have stated I meant forwards from Holland and France so my bad, hes a genius and hes our new god etc. but that goes without stating. Also im trying to get across the point of foreign imports of players who would be a viable option to clubs of our stature. We'd never be able to aquire a Ruud, or Drogba at the moment, anyone of that stature or quality will without question end up at one of the European giants. Or Man City.

Its the money brandished about for players from abroad that worries me most. They generally are happy to come here, grab a wage and be content with that. The likes of Ba, Odemwinge and Santa Cruz (Pre City) were great signings and came for relative pittance in todays market.

Am I the only person on here who doesn't really rate Odemwingie?

And have been for years, which is why the boom in foreign players occurred.

It's worth remembering that the Mancs bought Cantona with hardly any experience in England for £1m and Schmeichel for £1/2m. And those two won the EPL between them for years.

Obviously not every foreigner can be as much a bargain as them two, but foreign footballers are undoubtedly better value.

Take Citeh, for instance, bought the brilliant Belgian, Kompany, for just £6m - cheap as it gets for Citeh, but paid twice that for the crab-like England international Gareth Barry and about £25m for Milner. I know which I'd have out of those three.

Because Gervinho is class and we'd do very very well to acquire him, that's why.

Gervinho + Ba for me, please.

I cant honestly think of an English striker I'd realistically want. Wickham would be nice but not for more than 6 mil. Sturridge is another, but he'd be 12-15mil and Bolton probably have first option if he leaves. Am I forgetting someone obvious?

10 Million for Sturridge would be ok and I can see what you are getting at with Wickham as he is not fully ready for the Premiership yet so you don't want to be spending money on someone who cannot play this level yet. But on the other hand I think he would be a good investment.

I'd happily sign Wickham, its just the cost, I've heard they would want in the region of 10mil <yikes>

Not unless you look in the lower leagues - Craig Mackail-Smith etc. (even tough he played for Scotland, he is actually English)

Problem is as soon as Newcastle come sniffing for a striker whos already established the selling club will hike the price up because they know we have some dosh to spend.

Its always risky buying from abroad but we seem to have a decent scouting network going on and its about getting the right player with the right character.

I think our new CF will be foreign.

Sturridge won't leave, he may only be young but he has too big an ego. He thinks he is Chelsea's best striker and will return with a point to prove. Also, with Anelka and Drogba in their twilight years, he'll likely be playing week-in-week-out with Torres in a year or two.

As good a player as he is, he thinks he's too good for NUFC.

Gary Hooper, top goal scorer in the Sweaty Sock league is English & also young.

Don't think Sturridge will get a run in the Chelsea team, if they get shot of Drogba and Anelka they'll just throw another £30M-£40M at another foreign import.

Wickham at the right price. Yes. Initial 5m raising to 10m-12m.
Gary Hooper at the right price. Yes. 4m-6m.
Daniel Sturridge at the right price & wages. Yes. 10m -15m(with potential add ons).

Out of them three, I'll prefer Sturridge. Hooper is great in the CC/SPL but unproven at the top-level. Wickham same(not even prolific in the Championship but the potential's there). Sturridge I'll want but can't it happening because of the potential departments of Anelka and Drogba.

Sturridge - Yes Please, although highly unlikely!
Ba- Good squad member imo although if West Ham go down i'm sure we would be able to get him cheaper than 5 - 8 million as someone else has quoted in this thread!
Doyle - Can't understand the attraction with this guy, personally i think he's about as much use as tits on a fish!

Wickham will go to a top Prem club, not us. Sturridge will go back to Chelsea.

Hooper is the only real option, and I think he could work for us. Not sure how much of an improvement he is on Best though, so maybe not.
