Photograph: Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Sport Franz Beckenbauer has hit back at suggestions by the Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, that there were irregularities in the decision to award the 2006 World Cup to Germany. In an interview on Sunday, Blatter suggested the election to decide the host of the 2006 World Cup had not run smoothly and he suspected malpractice. Beckenbauer, who was head of the organising committee for that tournament, was unhappy with the comments. "I cannot understand the remarks and suggestions of Sepp Blatter," he said. Blatter suggested the vote had been fixed to favour Germany over his own preference of South Africa. Germany won the right to host the tournament by 12 votes to 11, with New Zealand's representative from the Oceania confederation abstaining. "When we talk about a World Cup being bought, I remember back to 2006 where, at the very last moment, somebody left the room and, instead of having a vote of 10-10, it finished 10-9 for Germany," said Blatter. "I am pleased because I did not have to cast a deciding vote but for somebody to suddenly leave the room â maybe I was too kind or too naive at the time." When asked if he presumed the vote had been fixed, Blatter said: "I don't presume anything, I am stating facts." Those facts, according to Beckenbauer, are flawed. "He has even got the result wrong," he told Bild. "It was 12-11 and not 10-9. And what was decisive was that the eight Europeans all united behind us and voted for us." The president of the Deutsche Fussbal Liga, Reinhard Rauball, has called for Blatter to step down as a result of the ISL bribery scandal which has recently come to light, but Blatter has ruled that out. "It is nothing new that people want rid of me," he said. "Sometimes it is the British media, then the American and then the German. "The truth is, Rauball called me last Friday and told me that I should resign. I told him that it is not as easy as he imagines. The fact is, I have been elected by the congress. No club will decide whether and when I leave."
Just as it has been announced that the previous incumbent was embroilled in corruption, i haqve no doubt in my mind that the truth regarding Bladder will be made known only when he retires or dies. If he knew about the ISL scandal then it was his duty to speak up then. The man is a total hypocrite and oxygen thief. The sooner the footballing nations of the world get rid of this arsehole the better the games world body will become.
Imagine having a job where the whole world hates you and thinks you are bent. That bloke has got seriously thick skin - he is right about one thing though, he certainly won't do the decent thing and resign. He is 76 and must be minted - I can't understand why he doesn't just offski to a beach life retirement and save himself all of this grief, unless he is worried about the auditors coming in in his absence!
Surely his days are numbered. As the head of the only global brand single sport he shoulkd have been running the game for the good of the game and not to suit political priorities. In my lifetime there has only been three FIFA presidents and the only one above reproach was Sir Stanly Rouse. No prizes for guessing his nationality.
FIFA is rotten to the core and only a complete overhaul will see change. As it is we'll just lollop from one bad apple to the next. There are another group of corrupt figure heads sitting in wait. I lost all faith a long time before the recent awards and clearly corrupt ballots.
Blatter's going no where soon unfortunatley, he has made it clear that he will only walk when he picks up the Nobel Peace Prize, hes been buttering up to the Nobel Commitee in Norway for the last 5 to 10 years and the day they give it to him (for his so called work in relation to anti racism and spreading the Football family globally) he will sit tight till he eventually has it on his CV
But the only thing that is a sure thing in life........................you die. And I worship the ground thats coming to him.
Both FIFA and UEFA are busted flushes imo and beyond saving. Its time a new federation for both organisations was formed and take the power and money away form these useless set of crooked half wits and ne'er do wells. I am sick to death of reading about Septic Bloater and Micky CowPlatt.
You missed out the great french footballer/ poor polatician / complete ego maniac plattttttttinnnniiii. Apart from that, spotty dog.
