Rio Ferdinand Shows True Colours.

The point re spitting in someone's face was on a scale of insults in my view spitting in another's face is surpassed by nothing , In Caribbean culture it's topped by calling someone a Coconut and all it's variations.

 

So is it not the same with the choc ice? It seems to me to be akin to referring to someone as a "white supremacist" or "Klansman". Both of those would clearly imply you were of a certain race, and held specific views towards another race. Would you say someone who used either of those terms was racist?

 

So why is it insulting to say someone is white inside?

If a black man is insulted by accusations of acting/thinking like a white person then they must think white people are somehow different in their way of thinking.
I stand by my original assessment and respectfully disagree with yours, it is a racial slur in my opinion.
We are all products of our environment and Rio and Ashley are English with similar upbringings, colour, inside or out shouldn't be the subject of ridicule.

There doesn't have to be something wrong with it for it to be insulting.

Some Scotsmen get very insulted when foreigners (usually Americans) mistake them for being English. Doesn't mean they are racist against the English. When my sister was younger she had her hair cut short and got very insulted whenever anyone mistook her for a boy. Does that make her a sexist? And have you tried calling a Native American an Indian? Or would their offended reaction mean they must be racist towards Indians?

It all depends on your cultural heritage. If you are very proud of your culture and what it stands for, you could be very insulted by someone claiming you are abandoning your culture and following the norms of a different one, even if you don't see that other culture as being in any way negative.

 

Would calling someone a white supremacist" or "Klansman indicate they had forgotten their heritage ? Nope, I guess some would say the dead opposite .......But let’s turn it around. Would a white supremacist" or "Klansman feel insulted if told by one of their “club” that they acted like/wished they were black.....You can bet your bollocks they would.
I say again I don't perceive Rio's agreement that Cole was a choc ice as racist even if he had said/tweeted it himself. But it is an insult and he knows it.

 

But Rio endorsed the 'Choc ice' tweet because Cole didn't side with another black man, but instead defended a white man..
It's all about the context.

Completely agree with you there. Tho of course the insult part is all about the context - some people will take it as an insult and some won't. That, for me, is the main reason Rio's tweet is nowhere near as serious as the Suarez incident and Terry's alleged comments. Both Suarez and Terry said their pieces in the middle of a heated argument with an opponent who was likely trading insults with them. At that point, imo, bringing race into it does cross the line. But that's a whole other can of worms

And as I said before, calling someone a white supremacist would be because they were a white person who believed they were superior to other races. So are all those Nick Griffin bashers actually racist?

Back to the subject...I am of the same ethnicity as Ferdinand, and I find his agreement and his subsequent laughing, to be hugely offensive to someone of my own race!
