Internacional certainly know how to push for the maximum money don't they!

As a Spurs fan, £25m on a relatively unproven player is a massive risk and let's just say I'm glad you've taken it and not us!

Hope I'm proven wrong, but for mine as dumb as dumb gets. modric for 35, no brainer. Why are we always shafted in transfer deals??
Real get it right more often than not. They get better players and pay less.
For Christs sake PLEASE get in someone to do our transfer deals and take it away form the idiots on the board !!!They piss away huge amounts every year.

People said the same things about Drogba, Carvalho and Essien.

You shop in Harrods you get quality you shop in Lidl's you get low quality.

That's been the difference between the top teams in Europe lately and the likes of Spurs (no offence) who are knocking on the door but not quite there.

I dare anyone to say Ronaldo was not worth his £80m fee or Aguero was not worth his £38m. The respective players were the difference between trophies being won and lost

Levy wouldn't sell Modric to us, and if he did it would be a lot more than the reported 35 million Madrid are paying so we have to look elsewhere. Fair play to Levy, he's not going to make a rival stronger.

We've been calling out for flair players since robben left and now we've got Hazard and maybe Oscar too. I'm certainly not complaining...it's not my money!!

This is the same player that QPR couldn't get a work permit for in January, isn't it? Trying to sign players pre empting their hype is nothing to do with shopping for quality.

We signed Sandro early from the same club for a large but not unreasonable fee for a young player with no European football experience and tried to do the same with Damiao. Potentially those two could've cost around the same price as Oscar for them together. That wouldn't have been the difference between shopping at Harrods and Lidls, more the difference between taking a gamble on a promising player and taking a gamble on a promising player for the thick end of £30mill.

Was Sandro a full Brazil international with huge potential?

Yes <ok> Only a year later there were several Italian clubs interested at supposedly buying him for double what we paid and that's what I mean about signing players on the right side of their hype, in a matter of months players add millions to their value and can also lose millions on their value.

I know football is about more than a starting 11 these days, but where the hell are you going to fit all these midfield players in. As Roo posted on our board, you have

    Essien
    Romeu
    Ramirez
    Lampard
    Mikel
    Miereles
    Malouda (likely to leave)
    Marin
    Hazard
    Mata

there's still 10 big names, even when Malouda leaves and Oscar comes in. then there's the youngsters who are starting to compete for a place, who haven't been included.

How do you think DiMatteo is going to keep all of these on board?

I see where you're coming from but the players you have listed will compete for 5 places in our likely 433 or 4231 systems. That's basically 2 players per place which is essential to compete at the top end of multiple competitions. Look at the current City squad and the Chelsea squads from 2004-2007 and that's why the respective teams did so well.

True but flair/playmaker types are always going to costsa lot more than functional midfielders like Sandro. Look at the money being touted for Lucas Moura and Neymar and its clear that 20-25 million on Oscar whilst not cheap, is pretty much the going rate for young quality brazilian talent. Pato cost nearly 20 million about 5 years ago when he went to Milan.

Oscar looks class from what I've seen.

Next season is already looking very interesting.

I agree with what you're saying about attacking players costing more but the reason I brought up Sandro was because it was an example of getting a player a few months before the hype saving us money, or allowing us to be able to afford him depending how you see it. Oscar looks like he's bought at near the peak of his hype that he could've got in Brazil, costing you an inflated fee, from when he couldn't even get a work permit to play for QPR a few months ago. I'm not saying he won't be worth it but DL's assertion that you're getting a higher echelon of player because you pay big prices is wrong. You pay the extra for the hyped potential but that's nothing until they've fulfilled it.

Fair point. We've come close and missed out on a few of these 'wonder kids' before (Neymar, Pato, Lucas Moura have all been heavilly linked to us) so maybe we're paying a bit more to ensure it gets done this time. Will be excited to see him at the Bridge if it happens as certainly shows massive intent for the club to progress towards a more expansive style of football and to freshen up the squad.
