QPR close to finally landing Canadian international on a free transfer

QPR are among the front runners to secure the signature of Blackburn Rovers winger Junior Hoilett.

The Canadian impressed throughout the season for Blackburn Rovers last season and currently out of contract at Ewood Park.

He scored seven goals and provided six assists last term for the relegated Rovers that caught the attention of various English Premier League clubs.

Reports came out last week that Hoilett is flying over to Germany to hold discussion talks with Borussia Monchengladbach as he keeps the door ajar for any possible move across the Europe.

He was under the watchful eye of Newcastle and Sunderland too but it is expected that he will opt to sign for the Rangers.

The 22-year-old will be available for a free transfer but whoever clubs want to take him have to pay the compensation fee to Rovers as he came through their youth academy set up and he is under 24.

And who sets this? Is it Blackburn and if we aren't happy we take it up with the tribunal, which could result in a higher or lower fee that is binding for both parties?

Compensation is never that high, I'd guess at around 500k-750k

its not a transfer fee, its compensation. Its actually a pre-determined number now which is based on how long they have had him, how much money goes into there youth set-up and all sorts of things as well rather than someone assessing around how much the player is worth which is what it used to be I'm pretty sure

Leeds have a player in Aidan White who is 21 and is out of contract and we are looking at getting around 750k if he stays in England, around 500k if he goes to another country in the UK and less than that if he leaves the UK. I don't claim to fully understand the system but I very much doubt it'll be more than 1m

    Sounds plausible.

Don't know where they come from but the figures bandied about in various articles state somewhere between £3-5 million. If he were to leave for another country outside the UK the fee would be £800k I've read. Sounds to me no one really knows as it's to be set by a tribunal, probably using the reasoning you state above.

If it's 3/4 mill for a player no-ones heard of, 4 mill for one of the Prems top young players sounds about right<ok>

This pretty much covers what i read also, but i don't understand the principal of a system that decides more compensation is due for a young player if he stays in the UK but less is due if he goes to play in Germany for example, this doesn't seem right given EU trade laws etc, and it doesn't sound like a level playing field to me - am i missing something?

    So that's settled then.

It could be anything between £1m and £5m.

    God, I hate Duckworth-Lewis.

Actually, Duckworth Lewis will help us - especially if it rains again... and if I don't go out.
