It's not the personnel it's the type of service. Drogba thrived off a direct and more vertical style of a play. Torres thrived off through balls and playing off the last man. It was square pegs in round holes stuff. I believe Drogba is the ultimate striker in a 4-3-3 system but that isn't the same for Torres who I believe benefits from having more midfielders and supporting strikers around him hence why Torres did better in a 4-2-3-1 than he ever did in a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Carroll was similar at Liverpool. Andy Carroll was never going to thrive in a 4-4-2 formation. The trick is to build your team from front to back like Arsenal, City and United did
