Celtic think world is against them.. now they have made us all look STUPID

STEPHEN THOMPSON has had his fill of Celtic's whingeing over referees - and claims they are to blame for the whistlers calling a strike.

The Dundee United chairman has always been the leading crusader when it comes to standing up to the Old Firm.

There is no doubting where most club chairmen point the finger of blame as we reach crisis point in our game... at Celtic.

Thompson is one of the rare breed prepared to speak out about it as he fears the Hoops criticism of match referees in general - and of Dougie McDonald in particular over his infamous penalty U-turn at Tannadice last month - has made the Scottish game the laughing stock of football.

As our officials prepare to withdraw their labour from this weekend's fixtures, Thompson believes it is all the Hoops' doing.

He said: "There are two separate issues to this.

"The first is the so called lie or fib or whatever it was and how it was all handled.

"The other issue is one club has been allowed to basically conduct a campaign putting pressure on referees.

"I think that is just unacceptable. We need referees to have games.

"I am not saying our referees are the best in the world as they will make mistakes because they are human, but this is not the way to go about it.

"It is utterly ridiculous now that games could be called off.

"I am worried about the image of our game.

"It damages the game here enormously and we look stupid in general.

"It should have been nipped in the bud weeks ago.

"I was not too surprised the referees have done this because I suppose it had been coming."

Thompson also believes that smaller clubs have more right to complain about dodgy decisions going against them than the Old Firm do.

He said: "You go to Celtic Park and they think the world is against them.

"When you are a club who goes to the Old Firm you don't get ANYTHING against them. It is a joke what they are going on about.

"Of course referees are not perfect but this just puts a big wedge between other clubs and the Old Firm.

"You don't always get the breaks and the last big one we had was at Ibrox a while ago when Mike McCurry was the referee."

Any sympathy Thompson may have had for the Hoops went out of the window at Parkhead on Saturday when chairman John Reid got the United chairman's name wrong.

The Arabs chief admitted he was INSULTED and shown a lack of respect when Reid kept calling him 'Stuart' as they chatted in the boardroom.

Thompson said: "The chairman of the club we played on Saturday didn't even know my name. I rest my case.

"I think that pretty much sums up a few things.

"The three or four times he spoke to me, he kept calling me 'Stuart' and that really annoyed me.

"If you don't know the name of the chairman at another club... how insulting can you get? I thought that was pretty poor to say the least.

"It is like me not knowing David Murray's name or Rod Petrie's or Geoff Brown's." The furore was sparked at Tannadice in October and Thompson reckons any issues should have been dealt with there and then.

The chairman believes Celtic's actions in calling for referee Dougie McDonald to be sacked have allowed things to escalate too far.

Now United are looking at losing out on a small fortune if their home match with Rangers is called off if the refs go ahead with their strike.

He said: "The problem is this is one of the biggest income games for us in the season.

"Who in their right mind would buy a ticket for a game you don't know it is going to go ahead?

"We have about 400 people coming for hospitality which is affected because we don't know if we should order food or not.

"We can't leave that to Friday. Then obviously you have expenses for other things like stewarding, policing, kiosk sales and programme sales.

"On top of that, people who don't know if the game is going to go ahead are going to make alternative arrangements."

However, Thompson insists it will be clubs in the lower leagues who will be affected even more as they struggle to cope financially.

He said: "It will be clubs down in the First, Second and Third Divisions who will be affected more by all of this.

"It is hand to mouth stuff when it comes to football at the moment.

"Raith Rovers are at home to Dundee this weekend and that is a game that will generate a lot of income for them.

"It affects everyone throughout the game."
