The first athletes have begun to arrive and the start of the games is just over a week away. I can remember been at school when it was announced the games would be in London, can't believe it's almost here! Thought it would be good for us to have a thread where people could discuss the olympics and share their thoughts on things. What are people most looking forward to and is anyone going down to any of the events or even know anyone who is competing in anything?
I'm off to the boxing a week on Sunday and will be in London from Friday to Tuesday, which I'm sure will be mental.
My typical morning swim in the uni pool is going to be severely affected by half the world's triathletes using it the week after next. We've also got Japanese fencers and wrestlers using the sports hall to train. On a personal note, I shall be attending some Equestrian and the closing ceremony but, having just got over the logistics of Wimbledon, am not looking forward to 3 weeks more disruption followed by a couple more for the paralympics.
I hear that, this morning, they've opened the 'Games Lanes' (already being referred to as the 'Zil Lanes') on main roads leading towards Stratford. Huge fines if you transgress and cross 'em at certain times!
The annoying thing is that they typically seem to be the fast lanes. So the left lane is a bus lane, the right lane is an olympic lane and you go where?
[grumpy old man persona] As of today, my employers have very kindly arranged for me to be out of the country for 2 weeks during the Olympics. This means that I have to find a home for the tickets I had otherwise I will be a few hundred quid out of pocket. Most annoying. And I bet with all the additional security, large numbers of people, etc., Heathrow will be even more of a hell hole than usual. Even more annoying. [/grumpy old man persona]
You just sit in the middle of the road confused apparently... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ol...-Olympics-Games-lanes-cause-M4-confusion.html
I'll be out of the country for most of it, so thankfully I'll miss the media-led hysteria. However I do enjoy looking at this lovely. please log in to view this image
I'm looking forward to the credits at the end of the closing ceremony, as it will mean kick off isn't far away.
Just heard: there's an army of uniformed officials let loose on the country, to hunt down those who are using the Olympic trademark, without being licensed to do so...... ****s.
Mcdonalds are the only people allowed to sell chips at the stadium, unless the chips are sold with fish. Pathetic.
They couldn't organise a cock-up in a brothel! http://uk.news.yahoo.com/g4s-shares-plunge-amid-future-contract-fears-100721075--finance.html
Better than they were before their merger with Securicor though. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...rs-undermined-by-loss-of-inmates-1455465.html
