Two men have been arrested after Cardiff and Swansea football fans clashed at a race meeting in Berkshire. Up to 60 fans fought running battles at Newbury racecourse for 15 minutes, leading to the closure of bars around the circuit and police being called. A 26-year-old and a 33-year-old, both from Swansea, arrested on suspicion of affray, were bailed until 18 August. Fans of the two clubs have a history of bitter rivalry but it was not clear what prompted the disturbances. Police were called at around 16:00 BST on Saturday by the racecourse staff after violence broke out. 'Sporadic fighting' The disturbance began on the ground floor of the grandstand and then spread to the racecourse itself, police said. Det Sgt Warren Craik, of Thames Valley Police, said: "It's believed between 50 and 60 people were involved in this disorder, but it was quickly brought under control by police." Newbury's managing director Stephen Higgins said: "There was sporadic fighting over about 15 minutes. "We have absolutely no idea why it started." No-one was seriously injured in the incident, police confirmed. "It took so long to get it sorted out. "Every time you thought it had stopped it started again. I reckon there were at least 30 people involved. It was scary." Another eyewitness Denise Mathias told the newspaper: "It just seemed to be a big fight between football supporters from Cardiff and Swansea. It was terrible. I saw a stocky man covered in blood having his head stamped on." In an unrelated incident, one person was taken by private ambulance to hospital suffering a suspected heart attack. Anyone with information about the fight, or who may have captured footage of it on a camera or mobile phone, was asked to contact Thames Valley Police.

It.s a topper mate... Now something different and debatable...and serious for once. ............................................................... Beaches remain closed in Western Australia after a surfer was bitten in two - reigniting the debate over whether great white sharks should remain a protected species. Benjamin Linden, 24, was killed on Saturday, the fifth such fatality in the region in less than a year. He was surfing near Wedge Island, north of Perth, with a friend when he was mauled by the huge shark, said to be up to 16ft (five metres) long. A man jet-skiing near him said it was a gruesome scene, with "half a torso" being all that remained of Mr Linden. Surfers said they had noticed a large shark in the area in the previous few days and had nicknamed it "Brutus" due to its large size. Mr Linden's girlfriend Alana Noakes posted a tribute to him on Facebook. "I'm devastated to let everyone know that my beautiful man... was the surfer who was taken by the shark at Wedge," she said. "He was the love of my life, my best friend, my rock and my soulmate. "Let's remember that he was doing something that meant the world to him. Surfing was his soul, his life, his culture and his passion." The great white's serrated teeth can inflict massive damage Local marine scientists described Australia's west coast as the deadliest shark attack zone in the world, and Western Australia Fisheries Minister Norman Moore expressed concern at the trend of fatalities. "We have allocated some Aus $14m (£9m) extra to get a better understanding of the great white sharks and the reasons why the fatalities are occurring," he said. "I wonder if research might tell us that there are now much greater number of great whites than ever before, and maybe we should look at whether they should remain a protected species." He said of surfer Mr Linden's death: "This is a very distressing event and to add to the previous four fatalities. "It is of great concern to me and to the Fisheries Department, indeed the government as a whole." A tagging and tracking programme was introduced last year and has shown the animals, which have no predators other than humans, whales and other sharks, can linger off Australia's west coast for months at a time. Mr Moore said he was open to "any suggestions from anybody as to where we go to now, because we seriously have got a problem". Despite their attacks on humans, white sharks are protected in Australia After the last fatal attack in March, Western Australia state premier Colin Barnett ruled out a culling programme, saying it was impossible to protect all people at all times. "While it's still a rare occurrence, the ocean is the domain of the shark and we go there with a risk always," he said at the time. Sharks are a common feature of Australian waters, but fatal attacks are still rare. Experts say the average number of attacks in Australia - about 15 a year, with at least one being fatal - have increased in line with population growth and the popularity of water sports.
Reports here are that only Australians have been targeted to date. Reminds me of an old saying about playing with matches.
Hmmmmmmm Two County Durham prisoners who disembowelled an inmate so they could eat his liver have been told by a judge that they are likely to spend the rest of their lives in jail. Michael Parr, 33, and Nathan Mann, 24, shared fantasies of killing while serving life sentences in neighbouring cells at Frankland Prison. They lured child rapist Mitchell Harrison, 23, into Mann's cell where he was pinned down by Parr, Newcastle Crown Court heard. Mann, described by a psychiatrist as "a remorseless, callous psychopath" who "harbours cannibalistic urges" and is "one of the most dangerous men in the criminal justice system", cut his neck with a scalpel made from plastic cutlery and a razor blade. He also stabbed him in the eye with a pen and, after he was dead, cut his stomach open. He and Parr had planned to cut Harrison's liver in half and share it, but could not bring themselves to do it, the court heard. Harrison, who was serving an indeterminate sentence for raping a 13-year-old girl in Kendal, Cumbria, in 2009, was found dead by prison guards as they released inmates from their cells on the morning of October 1 2011. Robert Smith QC said Mann told prison staff he had attacked Harrison. "He told prison officer Graham in a calm manner that there was a dead body in the cell," he said. Officers found Harrison lying on the bed, surrounded by blood. Both men were arrested and taken to Durham police station, where Mann admitted he and Parr had shared fantasies about killing.
