Good point Bargoed - and it's a time that I remember only too well! I enjoy the banter on here, but there are times when a line should be drawn; I would never try to score points re the Malaysians involvement in your club (for the record I think that it can only be viewed as 100% positive - the colour of a shirt is short term, it changes, then it changes back, then it changes again) - a few short years ago I know that I and the majority of swans would have been quite happy for the team to play in their underpants if it meant our financial problems went away. Some have very short memories; I don’t, which is why I would never criticize a rival team for acting in the best interests of the club!

As I have said before, enjoy good natured banter, but switch off as soon as it gets nasty and personal – healthy rivalry is all well and good, but there are some so called fans who take it too far – just look at the knuckle draggers who shamed both our clubs at Newbury race course today – these people aren’t fans; they are sad scum who have so little going on in their pathetic lives that the only way they can express themselves, and bolster their lack of self esteem, is to have a ruck with a ‘supposed’ enemy! These sad individuals grew up with parents/friends who passed on their antipathy and hatred for all things Cardiff/Swansea.

I would like to think that the contributors on this forum are a bit bigger than that – yes, banter and good natured teasing is a lot of fun, but when it crosses the line and becomes personal it is a different animal! Many of us on here are parents and grandparents; don’t pass your insecurities and bitterness down to the youngsters – they learn by example, so set a good one! The animals that shamed us today at Newbury were innocent and impressionable children at some point – and something went wrong in their upbringing that led to the disgusting scenes that occurred today.

    We all enjoy taking the piss out of our rivals – it’s human nature – but remember what banter is;

    ban•ter
    noun
    1. An exchange of light, playful, teasing remarks; good-natured raillery.

Not trying to be a killjoy here, just pointing out that there are some who are very impressionable; either through youth or lack of intelligence – and they will act on signals given out by their family and peers. If those signals are negative, then they will behave negatively!

I talk from experience; had a ‘friend’ and fellow Swans ‘fan’ who hated all things Cardiff – this hatred was passed on to his son who is currently serving a jail sentence for battering a poor sod who just happened to be from Cardiff; he wasn’t a football supporter, had never been to a Cardiff game – he just happened to be in a pub in Swansea and spoke with a Cardiff accent!

This is not an isolated case – have plenty of anecdotal evidence that suggests, unfortunately, that this kind of behaviour is quite commonplace. Hate is a very strong word – so think very carefully before you use it, especially if it is used within earshot of minors, because they can often take the most glib remarks quite literally.

It’s only football for feck sake – not life or death – live and let live, and set a good example to the youngsters – they are the future supporters of our teams and I, for one, want them to just get along!

Cheers John - falling on deaf ears heh! Guess some will never get over the bitterness, but don't persecute me for trying - the Cardiff fan battering was an example of the crassness that happens when so called football fans can't separate reality from fantasy - that Cardiff fan was a good friend of mine - and I continue to support him and his family - some things transcend football, when you get a little older you might appreciate that. We are not all the enemy and, whilst I am a fan of football, the bitterness that pervades certain comments on here makes me sick to my stomach! I apologise if you thought that my previous comment was an attack on any Cardiff fan - it wasn't meant as such - all I was trying to say was that this rivalry is absolute bollocks! I have friends from Cardiff and Swansea, and I consider them as equals - football is just a game that means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things - so just put your hatred behind you, it is a negative force that will do you no good whatsover!

The Malaysians are responsible for the Bluebird being on the endangered list . Cardiff fans are jumping for joy at there new found ambition without the thought of extinction entering there mind. While the Malaysians dangle the carrots in front of the fans , they're taking over the garden . Give them 5 years & see where you land . No fun here anymore , cheers all ... & enjoy the season like it's your last .

As always, I want to follow your post only to find out you've said it all mate.

You're absolutely right, and choosing our friends purely based on what team they support is not the best philosophy for life. I think we all know people who support the same team as ourselves who we dislike, and sometimes it's difficult to confront some of the things said by people from our "own side".

I know like myself, there are a number of older fans on your board who would go and watch the other S Wales club when they couldn't get to see their own club. It didn't interfere with the rivalry and there was always the will do outdo each other. But this never manifested itself in violence or even disrespect for fellow Welshmen.

We all know that the thugs just use football as an excuse to engage in their violent games. I've spoken to people who pride themselves on beating up Swansea fans and they couldn't even name five players in the Cardiff team at the time!

Anyway, I'm just going to repeat what you've said.

John - You are becoming an expert at taking things out of context in order to try and score a cheap point mate. You know as well as the rest of us what SC meant.

John, thank you. Yes, I do stick up for my club in appropriate ways which is why I have no time for people who insist on bringing it into disrepute - at any level.

Everyone will have a tale to tell about the fans of their rivals. It's not long ago that I was knocked to the floor at Cardiff Central station by a bunch of hooligans in Cardiff tops who decided to attack the train to Swansea. It wasn't a match day - it was just indiscriminate madness. On the other side, my daughter was badly injured when Swans "fans" threw the seats from the grandstand at Ninian.

It has very little to do with football, it's just thugs who can't find any other excuse to validate their violent tendancies. The more we engage in this "well they started it" business, the worse it will get. Surely it's time to disown this element and see them as social thugs and NOT defenders of a cause.

    Spot on Clingo.

John I know you are of the younger element but take a bit of notice of us old bu££ers as well. We have been around the block a few times, seen it, done it and got the t-shirt. Maybe over that time we have developed a bit of wisdom as well. Some of that can be imparted to you if you take the time to notice. <ok>

Clingo i hope .your daughter was not harmed in that attack at the experience has not put her off football as i was in the BOB bank that day and can remember that all the police did was to put mounted horses on the pitch????

I have traveled away with the City many times over the seasons firstly with me dad who has followed us for hundreds of yrs so it seems to listen to him and then with my mates ,the impression i always get is that we always have a great time away and i have never ever seen us start trouble ...now there is the key word"start".....yes when threatened and offered Cardiff fans will have a go but you tell me now how we are treated at away matches and if you treat people like animals you will get?.

Blue you have said you have been round the block ,seen it done it got the t-shirt well the youth of today are just the same as the youth of yesterday m8 ,nothing changes ;O)

Sadly, you can't teach everyone and the problem will never be eradicated, which is a shame as eventually family's won't attend.
Last year I went shopping in cardiff and my car was vandalised. £450 damage in total, all because I had a swansea tax disc holder.
Again, this would more than likely happen in swansea, and its bloody ridiculous to know you can visit the city's with your car, if you have acknowledgment of your team on your car.

Apology accepted John and no hard feelings - and am only just over the age of 45 ;) And would say that the sort of chanting that you mention in Wind Street is just not on; it is stupidly insensitive at best and provocative at worst. Have also experienced the same kind of thing and there is no place for it in a supposedly civilised society.
