Sky Sports understands that Newcastle United have made a sensational bid to re-sign Andy Carroll from Liverpool.

The Magpies have offered to take Carroll on a season-long loan with a view to that deal becoming permanent.

New Reds boss Brendan Rodgers hinted earlier this week that he could be ready to listen to offers for the England striker.

Sky Sports revealed on Sunday that the Reds would only consider selling him, while the player would only reluctantly consider a loan switch away from Anfield.

Italian giants AC Milan and newly-promoted West Ham United have been linked with his services in the past few days, but now Newcastle have shown their hand and made a loan offer for their former striker.

Newcastle sold Carroll to Liverpool on January deadline day in 2011 for £35million, at the time the eighth most expensive deal in football history.

However, since moving to Merseyside, Carroll has struggled to show any real form with 11 goals in 56 appearances and just six in the league.

Carroll did put in some excellent performances towards the end of the season, including in the FA Cup final loss to Chelsea, and that spell earned him a place in Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2012.

Carroll again did well with England, scoring against Sweden, but despite his performances in Poland and Ukraine new Reds chief Rodgers is seemingly unconvinced.

Now Newcastle have made a move for the Gateshead-born hit-man who was widely criticised by the Geordie faithful following his decision to move to Anfield.

However, should Newcastle persuade Liverpool to do a deal then there is little doubt the 23-year-old would not be warmly welcomed back to his native Tyneside.

Even if he is 3rd choice -

    1. He'll get a lot of games due to our European campaign.

    2. He's a better 3rd choice than Shola, and Shola isn't even good unless coming off the bench.

    3. It will give us the long ball option, and it works so well with Andy Carroll.

    4. Don't start crying about us going back to long balls. It doesn't mean that, it means we can switch styles in different games.

We raped Man Utd with long balls, and raped a bunch of other teams with passing football.

I agree it is win win, only possible downside could be Ba going the other way
We have a lot of extra games, ACON... with Mandy we would have a different type of striker to rotate or come off the bench.
Also, he was starting to find some form end of last season.

Sorry for ANOTHER Carroll thread. But I've just had a look on here, and on Toonforum, and people are crying, saying this means we'll revert back to long balls.

Some people are so damn ******ed <doh>

Why can't a side play different styles?

We can easily play our flowing football style one game, and change to long balls when it suits us.

If we sign Carroll, it doesn't mean we're going to play long ball football every game!!!!

And Carroll is severely under rated, people think that his head is his only good feature. He can play well on the ground as well.

He could still be a part of our passing game.

It's not as if Demba Ba or Cisse are good passers of the ball, and Carroll isn't a slow player.

We played a lot of long balls last season. krul to Ba/Cisse or free kicks to Willo. Difference is Willo can't header and Mandy can.
    People are idiots.

I have mixed feelings to be honest.
If it is for European cover then fine, but I think we should look firmly forward.
If he comes, of course he has my backing but we have a much better number 9 now.
Ok there's an argument that says its handy to have him coming off the bench but the lad brings trouble.

The only player we had who could win a header, frequently against CB's, was Leon Best.

Ba and Cisse are good in the air, in terms of heading on goal, but they're not all that great against challenging CB's.

Shola is a strong player, but when starting, he wins, at the most, 1/5 of his headers vs defenders.

Carroll wins almost all of his and is far better than anyone we have in the air at the moment. He has the strength of Shola, and far more mobility.

Don't understand the logic in this. Id love Andy back but we've got better players now in that position. I can't see him getting many starts. Seems like its a bit of cheek from the board saying we got 35 mill for him and try and get him back on the cheap. Seems like there just rubbing it in

To be honest he's kept his nose out of trouble for a while now, and he was England's best striker in the Euros IMO. Far more dangerous than Welbeck, and Rooney did **** all really.

No one wants Carroll to wear the number 9 shirt again. But if he's given the chance, he could become a toon hero.

He scored 12 goals in half a season for us. And that was with a percentage of the quality we have in our side now.

If Pardew and the club reckon it's worth the move, then lets trust them.

There were a few threads on the same topic so I have merged with the earliest time stamped one (Davey) the headline.

We have two better strikers, but if one gets injured, and when both go to the ACoN, who will we call on?

    Shola?

Ba and Cisse are two more technical players than Andy, but Andy is miles better in the air and far more physically threatening than Both. He can give us a totally different option.
