Rio Ferdinand has leapt to his own defence after calling Ashley Cole a "choc ice" (Brown on the outside, white inside)

please log in to view this image

Why is Rio defining someone by their colour, isn't that a bit racist?
Ashley Cole is English and bleeds red, just like Rio, so why is Ferdinand taking cheap shots and suggesting that black people should act like black people, not like white people? And just because Rio thinks his comments are okay because they're slang and used by many doesn't make it right, otherwise that defence could be used for every other type of racism.

Do any of the Members on this board think what Rio said is acceptable, or do you think he should keep his mouth shut and just concentrate on his football?

Just think what he did was stupid and unwise, and I bet Fergie will be fuming that he has got involved in all of this.

What he's said is stupid, but it's his brother at the end of the day. Emotions run higher when family are involved. Personally, I think footballers shouldn't be allowed to use Twitter. They invariably make twats of themselves.

It's not the worst thing anyone's ever said. We all get into a huge fuss about this sort of thing - it sells newspapers at the end of the day.

Fergie will quietly bollock him for being an idiot and we should all move on.

No, Rio is implying that Ashley Cole acts/thinks like a white man but looks like a black man, where as MJ allegedly tried to change his skin colour literally.
The point is that Rio is indirectly saying there is something wrong with how white people act/think.AKA making a sweeping generalisation.
It's no secret that footballers aren't always the brightest bulb in the house, but if we're to use that as an excuse for racism in regards to one player, we have to give all players the same luxury, right? Hence footballers aren't racist, just stupid.

He's insulting white people by saying Ashley only defended John Terry because he was thinking/acting like a white person.(I didn't want to bring Terry into this, but have no choice now)
And he's insulting a black person (Cole) by accusing him of not being true to his skin colour.
Skin colour isn't relevant if we're to believe we are all the same underneath, so Rio's just adding fuel to the fire by trying to make it relevant.

Changing his colour & race? So what's the difference between how white and black people think then?
All Cole did was give evidence as he saw it. So he should have given evidence against JT on the basis that JT is white? Is that what was meant?

shwan sounds like a Liverpool supporter defending Suarez and blaming it all on 'cultural' differences.

I can make allowances because English isn't your native language (I hope) but I think on this occasion you're failing to grasp the situation.
Ferdinands comments are race related insults, I don't need to view your link to realise you've got the wrong end of the stick.
Rio somehow thinks he's a forward thinking philosopher and his opinions are worthy of publication. The fact is he's an overpaid footballer with very little in the brain department. Lets face it, if not for his footballing gift he'd likely either be involved in gang crime or working a non skilled minimum wage job.

Along with 'Bounty', 'Choc Ice' is a euphemism for 'Uncle Tom', which is taken to mean 'someone who is over-eager to win the approval of whites.'

Whether or not Rio repeated it with this intention, it's ridiculous for him to have even acknowledged the tweets.

I don't like either Terry or Ferdinand; but if Terry could characterised as a violent, cheating, money grabbing racist then Ferdinand is a speeding, homophobic, drug taking drunk driver with a penchant for group sex tapes. There is no point bringing players character into this, as Rio has done with Ashley- he's only a gun-toting, money grabbing, car speeding, philanderer who broke the nations sweethearts heart.

Point is that the comment made had racist overtones and Rio agreed with them in writing. Try to gloss it over if you like but the message is that Cole shouldn't have given evidence because JT is white.

Exactly. He should have kept his gob shut really, but it's hardly surprising he's spoke out on his brother's behalf.

Hardly can you say its emotions when he says it on twitter dude. Twitter you have to actually switch on the pc and type something out and hit enter. When you say something it can be emotional as it just pops out ur mouth.

The thing is rio uses twitter for the fame. He wants people to listen to him and probably loves it when his tweets are reported on bbc or sky. As his career is now basically in massive decline I think he is using twitter more and more to try and hang onto the fame.

Lets face it, except for rare examples like beckham (for non-footballing reasons) or maradonna, zidane or pele - when a footballer retires he instantly becomes a nobody. Nobody will give two ****s about rio then and he probably is scared of that and uses twitter to try and prevent this gradual process from completing.

So do you support the idea that Cole betrayed his race?

    Not really.

But then it is not my younger brother who it is alleged to have been racially abused, nor am I black, so it is easy for me to make the distinction and not be emotionally involved.

Well Rio is obviously going to believe his brother and feels strongly about racism so i can see why in his view cole would be for allowing a "racist" to get away with it.

It was something very emotionally charged that led him to post something stupid on his twitter. I dont see it as a racist remark.

You've all got the wrong end of the stick:

He's calling Ashley Cole a turd dildo. Surely this is something we can all agree on?
