Revitalised winger Wayne Routledge has not given up hope of resurrecting his Newcastle United career. Routledge has been a revelation since joining QPR on loan at the turn of the year, scoring four times in 13 games to help the Loftus Road outfit to the brink of promotion. Rangers are desperate to clinch a permanent £1.5million deal at the end of the season, but Neil Warnock’s assertion that a fee has already been agreed between the Championship leaders and Newcastle has been knocked back by Routledge’s agent, Will Salthouse.

Instead, his advisor has revealed the 26-year-old would love to return to St James’ Park for a second crack at making his Magpies move a success.

“Wayne’s going to come back to Newcastle United in the summer. There’s no deal in place between QPR and Newcastle, there’s an option of a permanent move as part of the deal but nothing has been agreed at the moment and he’s looking forward to returning. He’d like to come back to Newcastle United and show what he can do, to be honest, but obviously if Newcastle don’t want him then it is difficult for him. But at this moment in time he’s looking forward to coming back and trying to fight for his place at Newcastle. He’s enjoyed his time so far and has two years left on his contract, so he’s certainly not looking to move on unless Newcastle want him to.”

Routledge’s desire to return is one thing but much will rest on how Alan Pardew’s summer recruitment drive progresses. The United boss has the £35million Andy Carroll kitty to spend and had suggested he was ready to let the former England under-21 man leave after concluding he would not command regular starts. But Routledge’s upturn in form since returning to the Championship has been noted at St James’ Park and there could yet be an opportunity for a player with two years left on his contract. Since the winger’s departure, injury-hit Newcastle have been left searching for stop-gap solutions all over the pitch – including shifting Danny Simpson into Routledge’s right wing slot for one game. The major issue is whether the player is capable of translating his second tier form into a consistent run in the Premier League if United decide to offer him a second chance. But the player himself would argue he did not get a sustained run in the team, with Joey Barton’s shift to the right at the start of autumn depriving him of starts. His last appearance for United was the 3-1 reverse at Stevenage.

    -------

Would only be worth keeping him as a third choice or lower winger in my opinion, since hopefully we'll be bringing in a new right winger, as we tried to in January which is why we loaned him out. Probably worth cashing in this summer, he only has two years on his contract, so if we wait until next summer to decide we don't need him we'd get even less for him.

If we get another winger/striker/midfielder in the summer, he will be surplus to requirements, as he won't get into the squad, let alone the first team. However, I'd like to see him stay, to cover for injuries/suspensions like we have atm. If he had still been here, he would have played against Vile, in the formation everyone on here wanted.

Stupid to let him go at the time we did. However, I get the impression Pardew doesn't rate him at all.

It can't be can it? Isn't there some rule to say that we can't sign Bosman people from your own country until expiration of contract but we can sign Bosmanites from abroad?

although i don't really rate routledge the question has to be asked , why did Pardew let him go when he says we needed pace in the team? i think with our current injuries he would be featuring for the first team atm ..

  12. I think we should give him a chance. How long did we give Jonas before he was good enough? Jonas' crossing is hardly spectacular, infact most of the time it's ****e.

Routledge can beat players and pass the ball well just as good as Jonas.

I think Jonas is one of the most underrated players in our team yes his crossing is at times abysmal but he is invaluble to us when we are under pressure as his runs with the ball take the heat of our lacklusture defence.
I used to be very Anti-Spiderman but I've been watching him very closely this year and he would definately be in my starting eleven like I said for a winger he could provide more assists and goals but his pro's out the con's and until we have a better winger he'd keep his place for me.

  18. I never said he wasn't under rated for gods sake, even i've stood up for him at times. He's been very good since the start of 2011, but all i'm saying is because of the time we gave him to get to the standard, we should give Routledge some time also. Not starts, just regular appearances. Perhaps he could come on for the last 25 mins for Ben Arfa or any new winger we have. Heck we could have Jonas and Routledge both as impact players, they'd be awesome fully charged and running at defenses. SAF does that with Scholes and Giggs at man utd, and it sometimes gives them the edge over their opponents for the last 30 mins and wins them games.
