I disagree, without a satnav I simply would not be able to do my job effectively, and I am sure others will feel the same. You drive to Bristol and you need Victoria Street for example, if you have never been there before, how do you find it without buying road maps for that area, or trying to find it from someone local, then you get directed to the wrong Victoria Street as there are 3 or 4 of them in Bristol. Though I am not saying there is, its just an example of life when you work in places you are not familiar with.
We don't have a country wide of them, in my case I would need one of Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Wrexham, Bristol, Swindon, Plymouth, Exeter, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Reading and others that covers those in between. It would cost a fortune as they generally cost about £5 a map. Or I could buy a satnav for my iPhone that will take me directly to the postcode I need for about £45 and I can update it for free every 6 months. It's a no brainer mate
Bloody hell musty, what century are you living in? No time for GPS??? I remember my wife working as a district nurse in Sydney and we had to go through a huge A-Z marking out her routes the night before work - at least in the beginning. Wish we'd had GPS back then.
I'm a sat nav fan mainly because I've yet to end up in a canal or driving along railway lines. A few years back I was driving through Toulouse about 2:30 am following diversion road signs when they just suddenly disappeared, as they do. The road ahead literally split into five different directions, so I pulled in and fired up my sat nav. It was a Navman with three year old maps. No problem. It took me through the most unlikely seedy, back streets, some so narrow the car could barely get through. I was convinced that we were going to grind to a halt and probably get mugged. However, five minutes later we were back on the main drag with road signs to all the major routes including ours. Impressive, I tell you and what a relief. The only downside, as has been mentioned, is that you do have to pay for updates which are expensive when you consider the promo or sale prices easily obtainable these days for a brand new device. I remember at the time my device advising me to "find the nearest road" when I was already on one!! It was a newly built bypass which did not show on my device and it often happened. Nowadays I use a TomTom which is great for the driving I do in the UK and all over Europe but already, the maps are out of date. Major route roads are no problem with good sign posts from city to city and I use a good road map (£1.99) that I renew yearly. Just to be safe I always print out a route from my computer as additional back up. Gotta love the technology, though.
How the f did a wum thread about the Welsh F A become the Jacks Do The Gadget Show??!! Personally I find Garmin more user friendly than Tom Tom but the immediate accessibility and updates on an Android device may make purpose built sat navs obsolete. I give it 4 G s! Next week we wil be debating Note Pads or Laptops?
Thinking of that, what do you reckon about Mac's ? I am about to buy one and was wondering if there are any mac users amongst us? The main reason of buying one is to manipulate images and films and as I have an iPhone and iPad already it will integrate across.
That made me laugh, it doesn't even have a coloured screen, clearly Norway's in a time warp!................... I don't know what version your wife has Valley, but my Copilot works great, though it is the very latest, but I do mainly use iGO 8, as it is recognised as one of the best, I've tried your Satnav but found the maps are not that up to date, and couldn't really get on with it. I'm in the middle of installing a Hackingtosh OS Lion 10.7, on a Lenovo I have, bit tricky but hope to triple boot with Win7 & Ubunta!.............
I find tomtom to be a better product to use, they update it every 6 months, and with map share you can update it on the fly mate. As for the maps, you should know that copilot uses tele atlas maps, the same as tomtom. Also that tomtom owns tele atlas so I seriously doubt that co pilot maps would be more up to date. As for unbutu and others I don't use as I have very little use for them outside work.
Out of interest dragon, how do you get a copy of the latest mac operating system ? I would buy just that rather than buying the lot and dual boot with my windows 7
Valley got a Macbook Air, best thing I ever bought. So quick and compact, takes a little getting used to in the beginning but a great laptop.
