Morning all.

In the light of our recent clashes with a certain QPR WUM, last night I sent a PM to one of the QPR mods, asking if there was anything he could do to warn the offender off for us. Here's his reply:

'I understand your problem. We, like you, enjoy having posters from other clubs coming on to our board for football based discussion and good humoured banter, and are pretty tolerant generally, but repetitive wumming, particularly of a personal nature, puts a strain on things.

What we do if someone is becoming an irritation is simply to ask cyprussyd to ban him from our board for whatever length of time we feel appropriate based on the severity of the problem. We banned two awkward Norwich posters recently and the problem was solved overnight.

I would strongly recommend this course of action. Anything we say to Northolt from this end may well fall on deaf ears.

I'm cc'ing this note to my fellow mods so they are aware of the problem.'

So, here are two questions:

1. Is this what we want to do? Shall we ask Syd to ban NORTHOLT from the board for a time?
2. Does the recent arrival of QPR WUMs (and I suspect NORTHOLT won't be the last) mean that now it is time for us to choose a mod for ourselves?

What does everyone think?

Morning Captain.

I'm pleasantly surprised you got such a helpful response, it restores a bit of faith in the powers that be on this forum.

I agree though. I'm no saint as I shouldn't have engaged him as much as I have done, but something does need to be done.

Didn't we discuss this before, and we came to the conclusion all our mod would be able to do is ask cyprussyd to ban them? The QPR Wums tried it last year, but we literally had no problem after we beat them 6-0. We can't rely on results like that to keep them at bay, obviously, so I'm open to the idea of a mod, if they were able to fast-track the banning process at the very least.

I don't really have a problem with HOLT, he's not insulting and his posts are meant in good humour. I have posted a few on the QPR board in my time so cannot say I am absolved from blame, the difference being that my posts were not intended to wind someone up, but my obvious bias toward Fulham and hatred toward QPR certainly means they may have appeared that way.

I have a few arguments on twitter the other day over the signing of Rodallega. One Everton fan who was obviously bitter Rodallega joined us over them called me a 'bellend' and that I 'didn't know what I was talking about' just when I asked for proof/quotes that Rodallega was earning 70K p/w at Fulham. He was also racist, and not to mention, 15 years of age.

These are the type of people I would want removed from this board, HOLT I can handle.

I can't speak for anyone else, NORTHOLT, but I don't mind you posting on here in principle. What I mind is the constant wumming, insulting comments, disparaging other people's knowledge of the game, etc. rather than actually, you know, talking like a grown up. If you come on the board to talk reasonably about football - rather than trying to get a reaction, insulting people and questioning their sexuality - then I'm happy to have you on here. I'm not optimistic that you'll engage in a mature manner, to be honest, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

One of the things I miss about the old BBC site is the engagement with fans of other clubs. The trouble with this site is that when that happens, a higher proportion of that engagement seems to be hostile and WUM-based.

Notwithstanding the response from Northolt and I thank him for the gesture, the topic needs airing. So I won't change what I was typing at the same time he posted. [And I now see also a post from Captain - I'm just not as quick as these youngsters any more !!]

Thanks Captain and the QPR mod. Like everyone on here I’ve been annoyed by the posts of Northolt and his cohort Ellars. Firstly, because of their childish and at times offensive nature. And secondly because of the distraction they cause.

In many ways it’s the second that bothers me most. The scatter and then quick fire posts by both of them within a specific post means, I believe, that all too often a serious/relevant comment by one of us is missed - not everyone has the inclination or time to tab through post after post (especially when they take up nearly a full page of blankness like Northolt’s) to see if there is something of interest. Indeed I suspect that whenever those names appear, most simply log out of the thread.

I agree with Bidley that we should welcome visitors. In fact it would be excellent to have more like Manobear and District Line - constructive criticism is good for the soul and all that. I’m prepared to believe that a lot of the posting (at least initially) by our ’rogue’ chums is shere excitement at being back in the premiership.

However, I also agree that it’s gone too far and we should do something now, especially about Northolt. A block I think would only be a temporary respite since he/they will probably react and only make the situation worse. Instigating our own mod is an option but as you say it’s been discussed before and not something most would want. The simplest course would be the “ignore” option.

To be meaningful though it would have to be exactly that - a pledge by all of us not to respond to one of their posts at all, no matter how provoking their comments are. Not even “6-0”. Simply walk away and don’t get into a dog fight.

That I suggest is the tolerant and dignified way to go. If, for whatever reason it doesn’t work, then we can re-visit.

I wish I felt the same as you. I'm just sick of him popping up with silly remarks when we're trying to have a discussion on our club, as well as telling us all to 'chill out' when he's the cause of the problem, not to mention making things up about our players and getting all huffy when people put him right.

You know, I've been a member of many forums on different subject matter, and football is by far the worse for childishness, and given the age bracket football forums fall in, I find it pathetic. No wonder racism and homophobia are still a problem. It just drives home how lucky we are that our board has the membership it has.

I think you're right on this C58, the 'ignore' function is especially handy for this, but it works better if we all adhere.

I dispute that I've even done any "wumming".
You lot really need to lighten up a bit like 'Bandy', he knows how to have a bit of banter. I've always said birds don't know how to do it, eh 'Biddey'! <diva>

Thank you GeraScores. I hadn't thought of that mechanism - the 'dislike' button. All together now ...

[Only when offensive though.]

Good points all around. I think the dislike button is a good option.

But generally it has to do with maturity and in principle self-respect. Also with the weather as they stay in with too much time in their hands.

I can't see GeraScores' post? What does the dislike button do?

Could you shout this a bit louder? Everyone on here seems to think I'm a bit miserable!

Can we not quote Nort please? I'm doing what I can to avoid having to look at his bollocks. The sooner he's banned the better.

Why don't we create a separate thread for QPR/Fulham, or even London clubs, banter, in the way that the Liverpool & United boards have. I quite like the occasional exchange although I can appreciate how it distracts from the original topic in many threads.

It'd be great if wums kept to that thread, but we both know they won't.

He didn't post Bidley - he simply clicked the 'dislike' icon/button. At the bottom of this post (as you see it), after "Blog this Post", you'll see three possible actions you can take and not actually reply. You have to be logged in to use the icons.

Also if you look at the bottom of Northolt's last post, you'll see that a couple of us have already done this.

This has gone a little too far. If you don't talk to him then he won't talk to you, and if he does ignore it. I don't mind the guy. I've come across far more irritating WUM's on the old 606. See the slogan at the top of the page? Comment. Create. Debate. Freely! People are free to do what they want on the internet, that isn't going to change so I suggest we all learn to live with it. When a WUM comes from across the pond and starts insulting people personally then I will start to take notice.
