I too wonder if Santon would be better on the right but he seemed happy enough and to be progressing well last season on the left and no reason why he cant be great there.
Sky claim deal around £7 Mil just about sorted for Debuchy who looked great in Euros so am hoping thats going to happen in next day or two.
Still baffled by abuse continually thrown at Williamson. He had some great games for us last season and not just against the bottom teams. Yes he had a few mistakes, which defenders dont but people forget his prem experience amounts only to the last two injury ravaged seasons so he is actually progressing very well. People have short memories, very short in fact. Have these people forgotten the abuse thrown at Perch last season yet he performed excellently for us in several positions last season.
Try supporting these lads and helping them to improve and encoraging them to perform above themselves instead of abusing your own players which never helps them and lowers theirs and their teammates performance.
Are we the "Loyalest supporters the world has ever had" or not. Ask Williamson, Perch, Bramble, Andy O'brien, Shola, Warren Barton, Dabizas, Tommy Gibb etc etc.
Do we have to have a scapegoat???

Santon links to Roma seem to be resurfacing, with a potential swap deal with Bojan Krkic, those French claims look to bare some fruit now with SSN among others reporting a Debuchy signature is imminent.

Hope Santon story not true unless there is some master plan in place. Krkic looks a good prospect who may well be welcome but losing Santon would yet again leave us desperate for a quality left back on the eve of the new season.

i've heard it's 7 million euros. Could be just a mistake in the writing though. Still £7m for possibly the best RB at the Euro's ain't bad business. Now keep Santon, see if we can grab Nathaniel Clyne on the cheap and we have our fullbacks set for the season!

7m euros for Debuchy would be great business, Nathaniel Clyne is in discussions with Southampton.

It would be a steal but I think it's most likely a misprint £7m sounds morel likely. I'd maybe still enquire over Clyne I think we would then have 3 good, relatively young, full backs. Depending on what the asking price is for Clyne of course! Sounds like Douglas is getting nearer to a move as well. Have the makings of a nice little defence, both starters and on the bench!

Honestly you only get about 80% of what Santon is capable of on the left. I've watched him captain the 21's on the right and his game has so many more strings to it. Its good that he has that versatility but at some point you want him in his natural role.

Its not really about disagreeing, he IS a right back. This myth of him being a left back seems to have stemmed from him breaking through with Inter on the left. But that was simply down to him being needed as they horrific injury problems at the time (Chivu was the guy he had to fill in for).

He captains Italy U21's and plays right back, and looks much better for it. he is much more of attacking threat. If you google it the player himself, though being quick to play up his versatility, has in the past spoken about how he thinks he's better on the right because he doesn't have to cut back to cross. When he was loaned to Cesena in Italy he played right back.

Pardew himself has spoken about him moving over and there was an interview recently with Santon where he mentioned Pardew said he would be using him on the right next season. I agree some right footed players are just meant to play on the other side like Lahm. Santon just isn't one of them. He is a ight back who is versatile enough to play left back and on occasion right midfield (his formative years in Italy were actually spent as a right sided forward)

We won't see the best of him until he moves over.

You may well be right. Could be interesting times ahead if Debuchy comes in. Wouldnt like to lose either unless another quality player comes in.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if Santon has to stay left to accomodate Debuchy. We are just a bit unbalanced down the left side but maybe Marveaux can help with it this year. I'm just concerned at some stage he will want to settle into a right back role as that is where he'll want to play for Italy. It is not uncommon for Italian full backs to play both sides, its something they actively encourage. Look at Balzaretti in the Euros, and they have lads like Cassani who is a right back who plays both sides. Obviously in recent history you had Zambrotta.

I'm excited by Santon. When you see him in full flow for the u21's down the right, he looks some player. With that season behind him it is normal to expect progress in his game this year. If you look at how players like Solano stepped up their game after getting the pace of the league, we look in a nice position with the likes of Santon and Cabaye.
